People should forget party affiliation and follow the dictates of their conscience

Dear Editor,

Fifty years on in our nation’s history and finally we the people have a chance to make a difference in the way we act as a people, a chance to change our own behaviour. The Movement Against Park-ing Meters has crossed class lines, it has crossed race lines, it has crossed gender lines, but we are yet to break through the real barrier to progress, the party lines. To become a real nation we must put the interests of our fellow citizens ahead of the narrow interests of the political party we support.

Few have criticized both of the major parties for fear of empowering their opponents; this has to change or we will forever sink deeper into the abyss of under-development. I have spoken both for and against PPP actions during their years in administration and will do the same for the PNC and its coalition partners.

Come Thursday, February 16 from 12-1 pm, I urge people to forget party affiliation and follow the dictates of their conscience; they should join the protest or stay away based on their belief about its merit, not on the political party they support.

“We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do.” – Mahatma Gandhi

Yours faithfully,

Robin Singh
