Japanese experts to help city

Dear Editor,

The Mayor and Councillors of the City of Georgetown would be benefiting from the expertise of Takajmasa Eda, Waste Treatment Specialist and Architect, Kazuyoshi Nishiura.

Both specialists would be working along with Council for a six-month period. Takamasa Eda is attached to the Solid Waste Management Department.  He would be providing technical expertise to the Department regarding the new Solid Waste Management strategy to be implemented by the Council. The Council plans to start a pilot programme within the school system, before proceeding to the wider community. The ultimate aim is to reduce the cost of collection and disposal by initiating a composting and recycling programme in the City. The Waste Treatment Specialist, Takajmasa Eda is expected to commence a comprehensive assessment of the waste stream and to provide recommendations on sustainable waste management as a priority for the Council.

The Council has commenced a programme to restore its historic edifices. To date several buildings have been renovated: City Engineer’s, City Constabulary, the Sexton’s Building and the Albouystown Health Centre. Several other buildings are slated for repairs: City Hall, the Mayoral Complex, and the Municipal Abattoir.

Kazuyoshi Nishiura will provide support to the City Engineer’s Department, particularly in the area of building designs and best practices. Both specialists are attached to JICA, the Japan International Co-operation Agency.  JICA provides an array of developmental assistance to meet the diverse needs of developing countries. The Town Clerk, Royston King said the six-month assignment is needed and timely. King noted that the Council would utilize the expertise and skills provided to enhance services.

Yours faithfully,

Debra Lewis
