`I know I can push athletics forward’

-Says national U20 javelin record holder and GDF major Shen Fung

Guyana Defense Force (GDF) Major, Shen Fung says the current state of Track and Field has led to his decision to challenge incumbent president of the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG), Aubrey Hutson for the leadership position at the next Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for Sunday.

Fung, who has served as the GDF’s Sports Officer on two occasions, confirmed yesterday that he will run for president at the association’s elections, which will coincide with the AGM.

“I want to see athletics go somewhere further than where it is right now” Fung told Stabroek Sport yesterday.

“Being around athletics for a number of years, I understand what athletes want and the support that I will be given, I know I can push athletics forward”

The 39 year-old who has represented Guyana at the CARIFTA Games and is still the national u-20 javelin record holder, added, “When it comes to track and field, I would like to see Guyana placed on the map and I know I can be the man for the job” he added. On Sunday, the AGM which will be held at the National Racquet Centre gets underway at 10:30hrs. The nominees for office bearers are as follows: President- Aubrey Hutson and Shen Fung. Vice President-Colin Ming, Godfrey Washington, Cheryl Hermonstine, Hector Edwards, Colin Boyce, Lyndon Wilson and Mark Scott.  Treasurer -Simone Gaskin, Latoya Archer, Kwabina Griffith, Nial Stanton (present) and Silus Brummell.

Assistant Treasurer – Nial Stanton, Carlotta Abrams, Carla Roberts, Elton Bollers, Raymond Daw Committee Members- Five persons from each of the nine clubs.  Constitutionally, nominations closed two weeks prior to Sunday’s election on January 6.
