Eagles whip NA United 3-0 to book quarter-final spot

Eagles stormed their way into the quarterfinals of the Petra Organization/ Limacol football championships soaring past New Amsterdam (NA) United 3-0 Sunday.

Going down 0-1 to Western Tigers in their previous fixture, the home side started in the perfect manner at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground in Linden as Kendolph Lewis opened the scoring in the eighth minute.

The score remained unchanged at halftime but Kurt Johnson added to his side’s lead upon resumption, lashing his effort into the back of the net in the 70th minute.

The result was sealed 13 minutes later when Kelon Primo scored.

The win meant a second place finish for Eagles in group-B with six points while NA United, with their third consecutive loss, finished in the cellar position without a point.Meanwhile, defending champion Milerock sealed their place in the final eight, battling to a scoreless draw with arch-rival Winners Connection, in an encounter which featured more crunching tackles and fouls than shots on target.

Milerock finished in the runner-up position in group-B on four points, edging out East Bank Demerara’s Grove Hi-Tech, who also ended on four points due to a superior goal difference.

Winners Connection topped the group with five points. The other teams that have qualified for the quarterfinals are Western Tigers, Guyana Police Force (GPF), Mahaica Determinators, Santos and Den Amstel.

All four quarterfinal fixtures will be staged on Sunday at the MSC ground with Milerock opposing Western Tigers from 19:00hrs while Winners Connection will engage Eagles United from 21:00hrs.

Over at the Victoria Community Ground, GPF will battle Den Amstel from 19:00hrs while Mahaica Determinators will match skills with Santos from 21:00hrs.

The winner of each group will receive $100,000 while the respective finishers will pocket $50,000, $30,000 and $20,000 apiece.

Winner of the event will pocket $500,000 and a trophy while the second, third and fourth placed teams will receive $300,000, $200,000 and $100,000 respectively and the corresponding accolade.

To date, Banks DIH Limited under the GT Beer Brand, Trophy Stall and Star Party Rentals are the other companies that have thrown their support behind the championship.
