Top cyclists battle for honours today in Cheddi Jagan Memorial race

The cycling season continues today in the Ancient County with the staging of the much anticipated Cheddi Jagan Memorial road race.

According to the event’s organizer Hassan Mohamed, the Neil Kumar and friends sponsored fixture is scheduled for a 09:00hrs start at New Amsterdam.

The gruelling 55-mile race then proceeds to Number 51 Village and returns to Port Mourant, the village where the late former president was born, for the finish.

Standout wheelsmen like defending champion, Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams, along with 2017’s leading cyclist, Hamza Eastman, his inform club mate, Stephano Husbands, Michael Anthony and Paul DeNobrega are all scheduled to gear up and go wheel to wheel for the top podium spot.

Last year’s road race champion, Geron Williams along with 2016’s most successful rider, Orville Hinds, and other prominent bikers like Shaquel Agard, Jamal John, Raul Leal, Junior Niles and others will also be on their saddles.

Raphael Leung is the defending champion of the junior category. He has since graduated to the senior ranks making way for some other cyclist to take the top junior position.

Thuran Harris (veterans), Richard Charles (mountain bike), Monty Parris (over-60) and Whitney Poyer (female) were also categorical winners last year.

Transportation for the cyclists and officials will leave the Robb Street headquarters of the People’s Progressive Party at 05:00hrs.
