Wales upsets Santos as Masters football tourney commences

Wales FC and Beacons FC eliminated Santos FC and Rasta Patriots respectively when the Easter Classic Masters knockout football tournament commenced Friday at the Tucville Community Centre ground.

West Demerara’s Wales upset highly touted Santos FC 3-2 under wet conditions and in front of a small crowd.

Royston McClean led the way for the unlikely winner with a double while the other conversion came from Michael Osbourne. Former national striker Anthony Stanton fashioned a brace on either side of halftime for Santos.

Meanwhile, tournament favourite Beacons mauled Rasta Patriots 6-3. Andre Trotz and Lionel Grimes each scored two goals for Beacons.

Chipping in with solitary strikes were Jermin Grimes and Deron Bowen respectively.

Lloyd Smith, Shawn Jacobs and Owen Huntley were on target for Rasta Patriots.

Up to press time, the second round of quarterfinals were underway. At 18:00hrs, Park Rangers was scheduled to lock horns with Thomas United with Plaisance set to match skills with Pele FC in the main affair from 20:00hrs.

The tournament concludes tonight (Sunday) with the resulting winners of the aforesaid quarterfinal matches battling in the semi-final round. The winners of the respective semi-final fixtures will progress to the final.

Winner of the event will receive $75,000 compliments of the Guyana Beverage Incorporated and the Bounty Farm sponsored championship trophy.

The second placed unit will receive $25,000 sponsored by Star Party Rentals and the DeSinco Trading trophy. The third place finisher will walk away with the Jermaine’s Enterprise sponsored accolade.

In the individual section, prizes will also be awarded to the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and the Best Goalkeeper.
