Despite the inclement weather, the 5k Health and Fitness Walk and Run in commemoration of the 51st Independence anniversary attracted in excess of 150 participants yesterday.

Under the grey skies and overhanging trees of Homestretch Avenue, the athletes and casual walkers braved the scattered showers to complete the event which started at the National Cultural Centre, circled and ended in front of the office of the National Sports Commission (NSC).

National athletes Winston Missigher, Cleveland Thomas and Nathaniel Giddings placed top three in the Open male 5k run and received cash prizes. So did the first three open females, Shaquaka Tyrell, Shema Tyrell and Crystal Hutson.

Prizes also went to the top junior and veteran finishers.

There were also two differently-abled athletes who competed.

The event which is the brainchild of the Rising Star Athletic Club was sponsored by the Office of the President, Payless Variety Store, Real Value Supermarket, Star Party Rentals, Guyana Community of Service, the NSC, E-Networks, Banks DIH Limited among others.
