E’quibo man found dead in Pomeroon trench

Police are investigating the death of an Essequibo man who was found dead in a Pomeroon trench.

Rajanauth Daljit, 48, called ‘Rohit,’ a labourer of Lot 32 New Road, Essequibo Coast, is believed to have died sometime between 9am and 5pm on Friday.

According to Region Two Commander Crystal Robinson, Daljit was last seen alive on Friday morning by a neighbour, who found his body floating in the trench in the afternoon.

Enquiries made by the police found that the now dead man, who lived alone, would normally fish in the trench. He was said to be an alcoholic and also suffered from epileptic seizures.

A report given to the police by neighbours states that Daljit was seen washing paddy bags in the trench, located in front of neighbour Karran Koomar’s home.

Koomar told the police that he left his home around 9am and when he returned in the afternoon, around 5pm, he noticed Daljit’s cigarette lighter on his verandah. He did not see Daljit.

Unable to find Daljit, Koomar then went to look for his neighbour and it was then he discovered his lifeless body floating in the trench.

An examination of Daljit’s body after it was retrieved from the trench uncovered a bruise along the forehead. Blood was also seen streaming from Daljit’s nose, according to neighbours.

Daljit was pronounced dead on arrival at the Charity Hospital. A post-mortem examination is due to be conducted.
