Body of Sophia construction worker pulled from Hope Canal

The body of a twenty-one-year-old construction worker was yesterday pulled from the Hope Canal on the East Coast of Demerara by a party of policemen after he went missing on Monday.

The deceased is Shaheed Ali of ‘B’ Field Sophia, Georgetown.

According to police, before Ali went swimming in the area, he was consuming Vasco wine and Turbo energy drink with an 18-year-old and his brother-in-law.

Reports indicate that when Ali plunged into the water he went down and did not surface. Minutes after they began searching for him but were unsuccessful.

In a subsequent report yesterday afternoon, police said at about 11.15 am, the body surfaced and was pulled from the canal.

The body was examined and no mark of violence was observed.

The body was transported to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
