The Police have deployed a team to the Lion Mountain area in Region 7 (Cuyuni/Mazaruni) after receiving reports of an accident there that may have claimed the lives of five miners.
“We would have dispatched a team from Bartica to go and check. We are not certain if the information is correct but we have dispatched a team,” a police official told Stabroek News yesterday.
The official said that given logistics, the team would possibly give its preliminary report this morning.
This newspaper understands that the accident may have involved 17 persons who were on their way to a Puruni mining camp via a truck stocked with fuel and groceries. It was said to have occurred on Friday.
An injured person who was taken to the Suddie Hospital yesterday was said to have been involved in the accident. He took his own discharge before he could be questioned by police about the matter.
