Proposals for Barnwell road repairs ignored – NDC Chairman

Representations have been repeatedly made at both the regional and national levels for the deplorable access road to Barnwell North, on the East Bank of Demerara to be rehabilitated but to no avail, according to Chairman of the Mocha Arcadia Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) Randolph Adams.

In the country’s largest public works project to date, the new Demerara Harbour Bridge is now a step closer to reality following the signing yesterday of a US$260 million contract between the government and China Railway Construction Company Limited (CRCCL).

DHB cashless toll system now in operation

The Demerara Harbour Bridge and the Ministry of Public Works will soon be engaged in constructing a bypass lane to further ease traffic congestion at the bridge, Minister  of Public Works Juan Edghill yesterday said during the launch of the country’s only automated toll payment system.

Suriname still to license 150 Guyanese fishing boats

The agreement between Suriname and Guyana last August for 150 fisherfolk here to be granted licences by Paramaribo starting from January, 2022 is still to be realized and Chairman of the No 66 Fisheries Co-op, Parmeshwar Jainarine feels the delay is as a result of a pushback from licence holders in Nickerie who currently rent licences to Guyanese and stand to lose revenue.

Trawler sinking probe finds major breaches

The Ministry of Public Works’ Board of Inquiry (BoI) into the sinking of a Noble House Seafoods trawler last month and the disappearance of three of its crew has unearthed major breaches and this has triggered safety inspections of all vessels and scrutiny of captain’s licences The findings have led Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill to declare that there must be changes in the system to minimise the chance of a recurrence.
