Decision soon on BK sand mine at Yarrowkabra

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Environ-mental Assessment Bureau (EAB) will in seven days say whether BK International will be getting the go ahead to open a sand mine in Yarrowkabra, on the Soesdyke/ Linden Highway following a fiery public hearing yesterday which saw residents of the area and workers of BK almost coming to fisticuffs.

President says no to opposition bills

President Donald Ramotar yesterday wrote Speaker of the National Assembly Raphael Trotman formally notifying him that he has withheld his assent to the Fiscal Management and Accounta-bility (Amend-ment) Bill 2012 and the Former Presidents (Benefits and Other Facilities) Bill 2012 passed via the opposition’s one-seat majority.

Budget estimates for scrutiny from Monday

Parliament’s Committee of Supply will begin consideration of the budget estimates on Monday instead of today after a sub-committee meeting yesterday saw the opposition outvoting the government side.

Rohee speaks but firearms bill defeated

The majority opposition voted against the Firearms  (Amendment) Bill 2013 in the National Assembly yesterday after the Opposition held fast to their resolve not to allow the passage of any piece of legislation piloted by Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee,  who  they had passed a motion of no-confidence in last year.

Bill for appeals in criminal matters gets unanimous support

In a sitting that had a little bit of everything thrown into it – including an Opposition walkout – the National Assembly last night passed the Supreme Court of Judicature (Appeal) (Amendment) Bill 2013 as both sides came together to unanimously support this legislation which aims to correct a deficiency in Guyana’s laws where persons are unable to appeal their cases because of an archaic English law.

It is unclear how much ‘bang for the buck’ Government is getting by the creation and use of its e-procure website since for the most part it is woefully out of date and has none of the current advertisements featured in the Guyana Chronicle.

Key change to sex crimes law passed unanimously

The National Assembly last night passed the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Bill which saw the support of the entire House as the Administration moved to correct what is being called an oversight on the part of the persons who were involved in the passage of the landmark principal 2010 Act.

Well-known businessman and owner of the Denmor Garment Factory, Dennis Morgan, 64,  died yesterday afternoon at a city hospital after suffering a heart attack, his daughter Upasna Morgan confirmed yesterday.
