Venezuela arrests allies of opposition leader Machado

CARACAS,  (Reuters) – Venezuela attorney general Tarek Saab said yesterday that two people close to opposition candidate Maria Corina Machado had been arrested, prompting Machado to call the charges leveled at her team “completely false.”

Ten killed in Port-au-Prince suburb as tensions rise in Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, (Reuters) – At least ten people were killed in a wealthy suburb of Haiti’s capital yesterday, there were reports of looting, and thefts of electricity equipment cut the power supply as lawlessness spread to affluent areas and gangs tightened their grip on the city.

Protest erupts in eastern Cuba amid blackouts, food shortages

HAVANA,  (Reuters) – Hundreds in Cuba’s second-largest city, Santiago, engaged in a rare public protest yesterday, according to social media and official reports, prompting Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel to call for dialogue in an “atmosphere of tranquility and peace.”

Bolsonaro says he does not fear being put on trial

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) – Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro said on Saturday he does not fear being put on trial, one day after a police investigation revealed the far-right politician tried to co-op the country’s military chiefs in a coup plan to overturn his 2022 election defeat.
