Dear Editor, A BBC story of a Sri Lankan maid who was beheaded by Saudia Arabian authorities caught my attention.

For Guyanese living abroad there are times when reports from home read like a litany of bad news; a succession of depressing accounts of domestic abuse, violent crime, political wrangling, inefficiency and corruption.

Dear Editor, The recent statement by Dr David Hinds on ‘Plain Talk’ giving the APNU coalition building process and activity in parliament an ‘F’ grade might well rattle the nerves of formal political structures, but should actually be viewed as a positive indicator of a developing political culture in Guyana.

Dear Editor, In an SN letter of Jan 6 on solid waste disposal in Georgetown, Mr Royston King, Mayor and City Council (MCC) Public Relations Officer, expressed the view that increasing the number of garbage collection vehicles in the already crowded city streets and setting up a collection/holding centre were viable options to solve the solid waste disposal problems of Georgetown (‘The city needs a transfer station to manage solid waste’).

Dear Editor, Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), the nation’s supplier of water and sanitation services, wishes to address the concerns of Mr Christopher Samuels, printed in the Tuesday January 8, 2013 edition of Stabroek News, captioned ‘Number 53 Village needs potable water.’

Dear Editor, I do not think that rational Guyanese would, for one moment, deny the need for urgent reform of the Guyana Police Service (GPS), but I would suggest that Mr Rohee has succumbed to a flawed strategy in his anxiety to prove his critics wrong.

Dear Editor, A few hours after having sent off my second letter on the Ashley Anthony/ Caribbean Press fiasco, I received a telephone call from a Ministry of Culture official inquiring about my home address.
