Violence against women and girls has skyrocketed

Dear Editor, As we join with the world in observance of the sixteen days of activism for the elimination of violence against women and girls, Help & Shelter acknowledges all funding agencies, government ministries, non- governmental and civil society organisations, faith-based organisations and other groups who have been diligently working to address issues surrounding intimate partner and other forms of violence affecting our country, being mindful however that we should not get stuck in the vicious cycle of reinventing the wheel but seeking to build upon existing foundations, to expand beyond our comforts, take new risks and embrace new challenges as we seek to eliminate violence in all its forms against women and girls in a world impacted by the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Persons with disabilities should be considered in all rebuilding and development plans

Dear Editor, The Guyana Council of Organisations for Persons with Disabilities (GCOPD) joins the United Nations (UN), members of the international and regional disability communities and Guyanese living with disabilities today to observe International Day  of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) under the theme “Building back better, toward a disability inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 World”.

Dear Editor, The recent press release by UWI Vice-Chancellor Professor Hilary Beckles that the Guyana government is planning to pursue tertiary online education courses at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus for 20,000 Guyanese is quite consistent with the PPPC’s manifesto promise to create the skillset needed to propel the country’s human resource development strategy.
