Anthem spin

Dear Editor,
I was intrigued by Mr Zephyr’s letter headed ‘Hail to the Chief’ and the comments which followed it.
I could not help chuckling at the thought that just four words could be spun, to poke fun at out-of-favour American chief executives whenever they make an entrance.
In the 1970s when President Nixon faced impeachment, his detractors came up with the line “Jail to the Chief.”  Then a few years ago when President George W Bush was allowed a second term in the White House which his detractors felt was based on irregularities at the polls, they sang “Hail to the Thief.” Neat.
Perhaps some genius will be able to create, in due course, a (favourable) spin on this anthem in praise of President-elect Barack Obama.
Yours faithfully,
Geralda Dennison

Geralda, that’s the greatness of the American way of life and freedoms. I read some of those quips and often say to myself, only in America, if it was in some other banana republic, many of the commentators would have been thrown into the slammer for their comments.

The comic forums have however confessed that they find it very difficult to poke any kind of cynic fun at Barak, he is young, articulate and cool. These attributes does not provide great fodder for laughter. But like hell they will try never the less, it is the American way.

Joe,by extension are you saying that Guyana is a banana republic?

If it were a banana republic Carl, I would rumble. I would call it “rumble in the Jungle”. But to call my country a banana republic would be doing its leaders a great disservice, while at the same time calling people like one Veecock a banana republican. I don’t want to do that. It is my understanding that those living in Canada have to un-freeze their brains at this time of year in order to function with any semblance of normalcy. LOL. Are you one of them Carl? Banana Republic? How dare you!!!. ISNM

    What is true?

    Ulric or me?

That Guyana can be safely classified as a ‘Banana Republic’ goes
    without saying.

    1. just look at the daily news and see how frequent it is that police and people
beating up on each other. What for? Better living…more money etc
    2. the government cannot stand any words spoken against it…check Benschop.
check Hinckson, check Lewis, check SN, check Sharma. Yea like any
Banana Republic where the people in power do as and when they please.
    3. what else? Oh so much that only people with their brains frozen can recall
as they thaw out. Them in the heat…welll they brains already burn out!

But back to Joe…. the favourable spin will be ” Change we can and we will”.
