First aid should be mandatory from secondary level to university
Dear Editor,
The Guyana Fire Service made an impressive move with its educational aspect of the fire demonstration just recently on the East Bank.
In addition, talks in collaboration with the Ministry of Education could be considered with the re-introduction of `Fire Drills’ within all educational facilities throughout Guyana and at least once every school term it could be put into practice.
Most importantly, a campaign of securing and placing fire extinguishers in all the above mentioned facilities is necessary and training will have to be conducted.
Two other subject areas I strongly believe that need to play a major role within the education system from the secondary level to university are training in “CPR and First Aid” and it should also be made mandatory.
I am aware that finance and personnel will be the key factors in having the above executed, but an attempt to have a discussion on the issue wouldn’t cost that much and who knows the discussion could bear fruit.
Yours faithfully,
T. Pemberton

on October 10th, 2008 2:22 pmI agree First Aid and CPR should be taught, St Johns Ambulance and The Red Cross should step up and keep classes teaching the same. A good way for schools to get students to learn this is by stating they need to do a certain amount of community service hours as part of their school work.

on October 10th, 2008 3:16 pmT. Pemberton might have a good suggestion but guess what?
…there are lots of other areas, subjects and general basics, that could
or should be taught.
So the snow-ball effect of improving the educational system to produce
a people versed in good fields however scant that knowledge might be.
Now that M. Xiu Quan-Balgobind-Hackett has migrated from that other
paper, we might get some submissions to that other paper on the benefits
of enlarging the scope of education.
Some areas suggested for the yound people to learn something about are:
….etiquette and the benefits of proper behaviour
…elementary psychology
… work ethic and the need to be industrious
…. health, diet and frequent exercise
These should be done in all earnestness and not as a casual adjunct to
the school day.
