Government should now turn its attention to loud music in homes and private vehicles

Dear Editor,
Now at last after years of complaints the government has decided to ban the playing of music in public transport. To me the only defect in the law now is that it does not provide for the confiscation and destruction of the musical instrument found to be breaking the law. Let us now hope for the constant monitoring of the law and the swift and condign punishment of the offenders.

Mr Editor, one must now turn to those private parties who either in their homes or private vehicles continue to play loudly and continuously to the annoyance of others. In this regard especial attention must be paid to places of worship which now use microphones to get out their message and particularly to those having Indian ceremonies, where those responsible, seem to think that because there are having a wedding they have the right to use the loudest music system that they can lay hands on and then to bombard the entire surroundings from dayclean to the wee hours of morning, for days on end, regardless.

Mr Editor, it is high time that people come to realize that living in a civilized society means that one must conduct oneself in such a manner as not to annoy your neighbour.
Yours faithfully,
Randolph Joseph
Eleazar

Eleazer, for as long as Guyana has existed the religions have lived in harmony, churches next to mosques next to temples next to bottom house prayers next to crusade tents - all in the same village any where in Guyana. What you’re attempting to do by stating the religious buildings which has loud speakers on them is trying to seperate the people religiously. Banning music in public transportation was wrong in the first place, enough now, leave us with our freedoms as we know it, Guyana is now a Democracy…Dictatorship days gone

mackydog i agree with you, why dont they go and live in the jungle if thay don’t want noise, How could the tell people what to do in their homes. soon they would tell husband when to sleep with their wives.

Mackydog, take your loud music along with your idea of Democracy to ANY law abiding country, see what they will do to you. Think you can do the Bajans that? try it. , see how fast you will be sitting on the bench at the Airport.

….. it is starnge to me,, how only in GY ,, laws have to be written b4 citizens can understand that they have been a nuisance to the community in which they live and serve ,, after their collective behavior of,, dumb times 10,, for MANY years ,, whichcan now put them in jail and or with fines !…

somewhere i read some one said,,,,,

” in everything be moderate “!…….. if u r not,, or ever was ,, then it is the responsibility of those in society who r the custodians of morals and values ,, to ever be observant of that which will certainly grow to bcome the monster of the mega speakers ,, amplifiers,, and microphones ,, the volumetric content of these implements must be harnessed to suit the acoustics of space ,, for comfort and enjoyment to the ear ! not only the useless need for high energy to deliver nothing more than annoyance to all wherever ,,, when ever ,, which seem to be all the time,, as is the case in GY ,, constant noise is also a pollutant in more ways that can be given here ,,, here are a few other pollutants that can be easily remedied ,, with simple methods ,, littering,, stray dogs ,, animals — 2 and 4 footed — four feet on the road ,, and two feeted ones vehicles ,,re - cycle PLASTIC !,,environmental “maids” — similiar to the meter maids ,, etc,, etc ,,,,,,,, and more ,,
in GY it’s all over the place ,, pollution is ,, owners of dray carts whose animals leave their fetid smelling dung,, which breed flies ,, and then as time goes by becomes dust and then airborne to become health hazards ,, some of which are “red eye” and flu,, they will be seen by the ” enviro-maids” since they will be all over the place 3 shifts in 24×7,, this will with their existence lend to crime control,, they should be armed with radios,, for communication ,, if it’s a female call for back up ,, before appraoching the suspect ,,

YO ! dog,,, i think u totally misconstrued eleazer’s text ! all of which i happen to support ,, not that u r supposed to,,, and i respect the fact that ur expression is ur opinion of the matter at hand ,, i don’t think religion has anything to do with the comment ,, it’s the pollution of the noise making equipment used by the religous
bodies ,, as for marilyn ,, if u want to make noise in ur own home ,, then u should be isolated.

aka master, have you ever experienced living in front of a rum shop? I don’t suppose you have.. can you say, go to toronto and break the law? that uncivilized behaviour can only happen in Guyana, where there is no discipline.

In the more civilized countries of the world it is a crime to play music from homes or private vehicles above a certain decibel level. People know this: loud music and noise might not have immediate deadly effects but in the long run it will make you hearing impaired or even deaf. The audiologists can tell you the effects of loud noise on your hearing mechanism. Listening to loud music damages your ears just as looking at the sun damages your eyes. It is just that the effects of loud noise is not immediate. Many of you will enter middle-life as partially deaf people. Just don’t force me to become deaf with you.
  6. M. Xiu Quan-Balgobind-Hackett GUYANA says:
If you want to make noise in your homes, private vehicles and churches, then SOUNDPROOF your place so as not to make me deaf with you!
  7. A380100 UNITED STATES says:
Well there is culture, and some countries are different. What is the “norm” in some socities are outlawed in others.

Please, “Civilized” is a relative word.

However, respect for another citizen and their right to quiet enjoyment is fundamental, so if the noise is extensive and you can’t hear yourself think, then it is too much. Tolerance is also necessary, so if someone has a function and it is just for the weekend, be neighbourly and tolerate the noise for a few days.

  8. M. Xiu Quan-Balgobind-Hackett GUYANA says:
Culture is relative; decibel leve is not. There is a tribe in Africa where 80 year old people have hearing acuity as good as a Western 18 year old because those people are not subject to the noise of civilization and deafening music.
  9. M. Xiu Quan-Balgobind-Hackett GUYANA says:
Listening to loud music is as dangerous to the ears as looking at the sun is to the eyes. Turn your wedding house music down!

  14. A380100 UNITED STATES says:
Did I ever say I wanted to be deaf?? It is the total lack of tolerance in Guyana that is partly responsible for the mess it is in. We have to live with others, if you want to be 80 and have that type of hearing then move to Africa.
  15. M. Xiu Quan-Balgobind-Hackett GUYANA says:
Blacx boy ears might be black outside but SAME mechanism inside like white boy and just as susceptible to damage from loud music. That’s why many minibus conductors and drivers shout, because they are so hearing impaired that they think they are not speaking loud enough. Deaf people always talk the loudest.
