All new guns undergo ballistics – Rohee

All new firearms have to undergo ballistic tests before being licensed, according to Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee.

He said that the system was implemented in 2005 and is also applied to weapons, whose licences are being renewed including by the city constabulary and the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit.

Responding orally to a question posed by GAP-ROAR parliamentarian, Everall Franklin at yesterday’s session of the National Assembly, Rohee said that this also applies to weapons used by the Guyana Police Force.

However, military wea-pons, which do not require licences, are not tested by the force.

wow wow…….so people can bring in military weapons……..and say its for the military??? Rohee………boy hey…………..
  2. Raymond Persaud UNITED KINGDOM says:
Mr Rohee is not telling the full story. What is actually being done is that several bullets are fired from the gun and the “war head” is kept as a record.

Now, the question is, are these “war heads” being “scanned” in 3-dimensions and placed on a computer system for easy comparison? I doubt this.

The system needs proper technology to be effective not just going through the process.

Who are advising these people? The Gov must accept that they do not know everything and should seek advise. This goes for Robert Persaud and the Ministry of Agriculture.

You have made some excellent points here Raymond Persaud.
SN should have given far more space to this amazing development to the Guyanese crime-fighting armoury.

It is not enough to retain the warhead but, like finger printing identification, it is important for retrieval of stored data to compare with a current crime investigation and SPEEDY RESULTS ARE A MUST because the criminals will vanish quickly.
Unless the whole system works efficiently, we would not have achieved much however as the news article was very short we do not know whether the full scope of implementation is in place.

Poster advertising of the fact that licensed gun holders can be traced from spent warheads should make gun owners more responsible and respectful of their weapons.

IT IS CLEAR THAT THE FORCES ARE SERIOUS ABOUT FIGHTING GUN CRIME AND THIS WORK OF THEIRS IS A VERY SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENT.

  5. bgsbny UNITED STATES says:
….. the question to be asked of the peg rohee is ,, to share with us his knowledge of a ballistic report ,, how it’s prepared ,, and where does comparison begin and end ,, and what specific high tech equipment in forensics was used to arrive at the comparisons ,, or similarities ????????????

we want de details ,, not just what “u know” abt ballistics !,,, cos right abt now ,,, no one is convinced that u know bull abt anything to do with crime fighting !…….

  6. Satish UNITED KINGDOM says:
Agreed tiger, but if they do not have that advancement; what if the warhead could be sent abroad for analysis and the gun owner would have to pay for this before the gun licence is issued.
