Classes resume at Stella Maris after agreement signed

Classes at the Stella Maris Primary School have resumed following a signed agreement between the school’s administration, the Guyana Teachers Union and the Ministry of Education.

This agreement was signed in response to a sit-in by teachers on Thursday morning, in protest at the poor condition of the schools.   And according to this agreement, all uncompleted rehabilitation works at the school will be finished by October 31.   This includes the replacement of the guttering systems and the addressing of all electrical related matters. Also mobile blackboards that will serve as screens to separate classrooms will be supplied.

A senior teacher at the school said that the repairs will be completed in phases. She said that on Thursday the debris had been removed from the school since that was one of the immediate concerns of staff members. However, when Stabroek News was on the scene, this newspaper observed some students playing with a piece of wood with several nails. On Wednesday a student of the school had to seek medical attention after her foot was pierced by two nails on a piece of wood while she was playing. The student is currently at home recuperating.

When this newspaper visited the school yesterday, it saw some workmen working on a trestle to accommodate the water tank. However, there was still no running water on the school premises.

Meanwhile, the school’s PTA was scheduled to have a meeting yesterday where the progress of the school was to be addressed.

I hope the educating of those children is not delayed any longer. In this world, for one to succeed, one must have a sound education. Let all parties work together for the betterment of those children.

Why is it alternative accomadation is not utilised until these repairs are done? Why are we placing our young minds at risk? This is definitely a safety issue and it is a reflection of how backward we are.
This administration should have health care and safety systems in place to monitor such situations.

Congratulations. Now can we proceed with truly nurturing our nation’s future human resource capabilities? Why is it always necessary for something unfortunate to happen before anything is done to remedy the known deplorable status of our PUBLIC schools? I remember as a primary & secondary school student back in the day we had inspectors from the Min. of Edu. come in. Some of the visits were known while some were surprise. They evaluated the quality of classes given, teacher’s abilities, state of the environment, canteens, teaching aids, etc. I wonder with the “improvements” our current administration has brought how much has this changed!?!?! I guess it’s now being done ‘online’

Complete and utter incompetence. Stella Maris used to be one of the best kept schools in the city. Maybe the government should consider letting the nuns have it back.
