Cops in crackdown on ‘Skinny’ support network

Now that the joint services have been able to eliminate wanted men Rondell ‘Fineman’ Rawlins and Jermaine ‘Skinny’ Charles, investigators are beginning to crack the back of what was a well-organized network that supported and aided, particularly Charles, following his escape from the Sparendaam lock-ups.

A police source told Stabroek News that the lawmen were in pursuit of many persons who lent all types of support to the men and were investigating others who could soon face the courts. The source said that once evidence pointed to the fact that those individuals assisted the escapee in any way, they would be charged.
Following months of pursuit, the joint services last week shot and killed Guyana’s most wanted Rawlins, for whom a $50 million reward had been issued for information leading to his arrest, along with multiple murder accused and prison escapee Charles. So far two persons have been charged with harbouring Charles, William Younge, his uncle and a female family friend, Louton Simon.

Meanwhile, this newspaper was reliably informed that up to press time last night, Charles’s aunt was in police custody assisting with investigations and being questioned along the lines of possibly harbouring the man. This newspaper was told that the woman, who was at the Georgetown Public Hospital mortuary where the men’s bodies were taken for post-mortem examinations on Monday, was arrested by the police shortly after.

The woman was held overnight and up to late yesterday had not been released. This newspaper was reliably informed too that a sister of Seon Grant, the man who was killed outside his Timehri shack where the wanted men had been staying for some time, was also taken in for questioning following the post-mortem examinations on Monday. She was reportedly questioned and released late yesterday.

Meanwhile, another relative of Charles told this newspaper that other relatives were afraid that they too would be rounded up and charged. The woman, who did not want her name mentioned, insisted that the uncle who has been charged with harbouring Charles, was innocent.

“William used to always say that he nephew ain’t gon make him get his death. But look what happen now. I mean he already dead and now its only more stress for the family. They done kill he. Why they want to lock us up?” the concerned relative said.

The relative was particularly concerned about aunt currently in custody. She said the woman was a security guard and a mother of four and being kept by the police for such a long time meant she could not prepare her children for school.

The relative said that she and others were staying far from any police station since they too feared being pulled in for questioning.
This newspaper was reliably informed that Charles was seen frequently in the Agricola community and was also seen with former friends. The police are said to be looking for several persons and a man who reportedly chauffeured the now dead fugitive around.

Early Thursday morning, acting on a tip-off, teams from the Joint Services Operation Group and the Guyana Defence Force Special Force along with members of the Special Forces proceeded to an area in Timehri about 500 metres east of the GDF ammunition dump. There, the lawmen said, they came under fire from shooters in an identifiable house. They returned fire and saw three men running from the house. When they descended on the scene they found the body of a man who was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The man was identified as Grant.

The two men who had fled ended up in Kuru Kururu at a place villagers call Kakabura at a small, unfinished concrete structure. There was an exchange of gunfire around 12.45 pm in which two men, later identified as Rawlins and Charles were killed.

Time and time again we have seen the GPF drop the ball when they should have been able to make inroads into criminal networks by virtue of the information that they were able to seize. One hopes, (even though one fears the worse) that this time will be different. I have seen bloggers give what should have been valuable advice on the way to keep up the momentum after a morale boosting victory. However based on the fact that follow-up arrests and convictions never came after the first big arrest, one assumes that either the advice were never heeded or they were incompetently administered.

One hopes that there will be a systematic, purposeful and deliberate dismantling of this network of violent fiends. What time better than now, with the GPF gorged full of accolades and morale high along with a corresponding significant blow to the morale of the gang members, for the GPF to seize the day!

As the Latin poet Horace puts it, “Carpe Diem” GPF! Let us see purposeful and professional police work. Here is an opportunity to dazzle us with well thought out strategy and brilliant deduction. Here is another opportunity to gain the admiration of a potentially grateful public for a job well done. Carpe Diem GPF!

Well all the naysayers will be out sympathizing with these nefarious fugitives family. As I mention in an earlier post when the story of Guyana’s most wanted man was killed, the PNC and SN will jump into the aid one way or the other to these thugs and not their family. They will spin the story in all manners to make the GPF and GOG look as if they are committing the atrocity in detaining and questioning and investigating how these fugitives were able to escape the clutches of the laws on numerous occasions.

People just bear in mind just as you sympathize for the families of these fugitives also too remember the carnage that was meet to the victims of those killed wounded and emotionally scarred by Rawlins and his gang. Stop politicizing the issue and use rational thinking.

The GPF are subject to the law in a similar manner as we are. They are keepers of the law and that responsibility does not give then leave to bend it and break it as they see fit. They must be called to task and made to toe the line like the rest of us. We do want to see them do their duty and bring down the crime rate of Guyana but we do not want to sell our souls to achieve this goal.

Rue the day that you or your family become of interest to the GPF. You will want them to play by the rules too when that happens. You won’t care how horrific a crime they are investigating, you will expect/want them to be professional and relate to you within the confines of the law.

That is all we are asking. You can never tell when your day will come! You may want to hop off that lofty ledge of yours and apply a principled look at the machinations of the GPF. Don’t forget, even if you are a US citizen they could still find cause to deport you back to Guyana and you are going to have to live with Guyana Finest. Wouldn’t you want them on their best behavior?

Well said O.P I so agree with you. It’s not about giving sympathy to the family of the criminals, but going about the business of protecting the citizens of Guyana in a lawful manner, otherwise there will be anarchy. The people won’t have any faith in the system and will take matters into their own hands, then where will this lead us? there needs to be civility, as painful as it may be.

The fact that they had no formal education makes them and the other gang members some of the dumbest criminals ever.
They were running from the law, which prevented them from being able to live in decent homes, have positive social life styles, and eat, drink, and wear the best.
They committed various robberies, while others reaped the benefits.

There is a supposition here that this relative knew where this Skinny was and was in a position to give information. I think the point here is, once you are related to someone who is a criminal it is supposed that you know about the person’s activities. I have numerous cousins. If one is a criminal does that give the police the right to detain me? I’m sure you yourself are not aware of the activities of your other relatives. Just arresting someone because he/she is a relative of a wanted person seems a bit strong-armed to me. I’m just being objective.

The Western approach is obviously different from our third world country’s. This is so because of our socio-economic structure & our culture. It is either out of fear or love that one would shelter & feed their criminal relative. The Guyanese police approach is designed (& still in progress) to deal with matters accordingly. American policing is effecive, English police don’t carry guns Russian police is brute & Guyanese police…?
You, in America, would not want to worry about being arrested if your relative is a criminal, unless he has your number & phone records show you have been in contact with him, if you feed him & if you give him a room to stay. According to yesterday’s news the police found the woman number in a cell phone which Skinny used. Perhaps they also checked the call records from GTT as well? These guys have been on the run for a long time, obviously they were not being helped by strangers neither were they totally on their own. So, then, where must the Police start in their attempt to crack down on those criminal assistants?Certainly not you & I. Sure, she has five kids but this does not grant her immunity from the law. And our people must remember, it is important to separate our emotions from our desire to see justice prevail.

It is important to dismantle any criminal network, including going after relatives and friends who provided coverage or had knowledge of the criminals’ activities.

And this is not limited to criminals who use guns, but those who use pens and phones. Those who went from relative poverty to absolute affluence. Those who rode bicycle to driving cars. Those who rented homes to owning homes. Those who had no bank accounts to having bank accounts. I’m talking about corrupt criminal elements who seem to be getting a pass.

Let us not be distracted by government’s talk about dismantling armed criminal networks when there is a criminal network of corrupt government officials who are thumbing their noses at the government and police.

Optimist pessimist, I had that colt45 on the hips during Burnham days when we had to keep vigil at night and work during the day because the police then, who still retain the vestiges of that era, refused to protect us with patrols or arms and instead told us to arm ourselves with batons to fight against kick down the door bandits who had SLR’s as weapons. I have very little respect for most in the police force who collect bribes at every opportunity and harass innocent persons sometimes.
I was in Guyana last month and was in a bar where two ranking officers were openly imbibing with a known local criminal.
That being sain, my point in the above comment was about the so called GHRA who finds it convenient to come out of its lair only to attack the police and government.
So…just keep your imaginary awards to yourself.

You will sing a different tune the day that you or your family become a suspect in any case that the GPF are investigating or if you happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when they are passing through. We know that the GPF needs to be a blunt object like a cudgel sometimes t’is true, but they also need to be a scalpel at other times too. Today because they lack intelligence, capability and resource ful leaders, they are almost always cudgel.

The GPF needs to respect the law too. Not because they are keepers of the law means that they are above the law. They have to be made to be accountable in a similar manner that we lesser mortals are. There is not enough effort being done to eradicate the bad apples and the bribe takers in the bunch. Another big problem is that the police cannot be allowed to police/investigate themselves. Within the police force they need to be very close knit and have a mind set to always protect each other. With this social behavior in place, how can they effectively investigate each other?

Where were the single parent (mother) and the other `concerned’ relatives of Fine Man and Skinny when they were slaughtering innocent sleeping children and their parents in the dead of night?

All of a sudden, do you expect us to sympathise with those who supported these killers?

Single parent or not, the full force of the law must be brought to bear on those who are aided and abetted these monsters.

What about those children who were never able to go to school- because they were killed by Skinny and Fineman and other beasts who seem to still be at large?

I would never forget the photos of the Lusignan Massacre where a child hugged her mother in death.

All of a sudden we are hearing that these killers were church-going boys. Which Church? What religion taught them to become such monstrous killer?

I commend the President, Minister of Hoem Affairs, the heads of the Police and Army and all those Joint Services personnel who eliminated these beasts from our midst.

Go full steam ahead boys and get those involved in the network which supported these killers. They are equally guilty and must be made to pay the ultimate price.

These are people with a different mindset and all Guyana must collectively condemn their actions.

Let the court decide their fate.

Once and for all, these people must be put away. We do not need them in society.

Skinny and Fineman thrived in their deadly enterprise because of the support of these other criminals who now cliam innocence and sympathy.

The Ministry of Human Affairs can take care of the children whilst their parents pay for their deeds and are put way in jail for a long time.

In so doing, we can be somewhat sure that these children will be better influenced to lead positive lives in society rather than become criminals, too.

The security forces must remain unwavering in its quest to bring an end to the network which supported this deadly gang.

The security forces must also not let- up in finding the rest of the criminals such as White Boy, Chucky and Not Nice.

They must be found and eliminated from society if we are to have peace, tranquility and development in this beautiful land of ours.

The joint services need to be very careful with the tapes they “have” of the criminals and their accomplices in Buxton. They need to take their time and not cause more problems than there already are.

-The people who made the recordings need to be taken care of. The police and government need to do everything they can to make sure that these people and their family are protected, even if that means getting them out of the country. Remember what happened to the man and his wife in Agricola? If these people are not protected then, in the future, others will not be encouraged to assist the police.

-The police need to take their time and carry out their investigations fully before releasing the tapes. They need to make sure that they capture everyone connected to the criminal network and prosecute them.

-The police also need to come up with a plan to handle the backlash which will be created after they make their arrests. How will they handle street demonstrations and unruly protesters who will be chanting ‘e innocent, e nevuh hort no-baddy’.

The Guyana police force is in the spotlight now. It’s time they show the Guyanese citizens that they mean business.

We can’t justify people breaking the laws by making excuses. If Fineman and Skinny’s family are found to have been in cohorts with them, then let the law take its course.

Now we must let the law be evenhanded, all criminals must be brought to face the blindfolded lady. This is not done in Guyana. We are not going to see or feel peace in this country until all criminals face the law. Peole are always going to justify their criminal acts on the remiss of the system. We have too many people with financial power and connections who do the less bloodier equviqlent to Fineman and Skinny and are walking the streets knowing to everyone and nothing is done. Please don’t even think that I am justifying or watering down Fineman and Skinny, I am categorically stating this is not so. I am simply saying that the man who puts someone in a coffin and the man who puts his hand in the state’s coffer, must face the law.

Two days ago I was driving home, I came upon a police roadblock,I was asked to open my car trunk, I had no problem with that. The car behind me was driven by someone of a different ethnic makeup and about my age, the police looked at him and sent him along his way with a smile. Now,how did the police decide to check who had something in their car trunk and who hadn’t? How can he tell that the guy behind me didn’t have something in his trunk? This is what I am talking about. Our system is not blind, it is one eyed

Hey John….Sounds like profiling by the police in your situation. It is unfortunate that this continues to happen. Happens here in the US quite frequently.

Stone, you know something? That is why crime will continue, they looking in the wrong direction. People are not stupid, you blame the “usual suspect” while the real ones leave carnage in their wake and the funny thing is, they are still looking at the “usual suspect”. My mother used to say when you smell something bad, check your top lip and stop looking around for dead dog.
