Cops probing death of toddler

Police are investigating the death of a two-year-old boy after being treated for “a suspected wound” at the Georgetown Hospital.

The lawmen in a release said that the child, Malaki Osborne, died at the institution at around 2:45 pm yesterday and his father has since been taken into custody.

A police source last evening told Stabroek News that the father is saying that the child died after falling on a drinking glass while playing at his Achievement Place, South Ruimveldt home.

Stabroek News understands that the child’s mother is overseas and he lives with an aunt but spends the weekends with his father, who is a former policeman. The aunt declined to speak yesterday.

According to the police source the father said that he was downstairs when he heard a loud crash and upon investigating he saw his son lying on the ground with part of his intestines protruding. He said he is not sure how his son fell on the glass in a room and could not tell police about the circumstances leading up to the incident. He is of the opinion that the child may have climbed up to pull a curtain but there is no explanation as to what a glass was doing in the room. He said he rushed the child to the hospital but he was later pronounced dead.

Stabroek News visited the area where the man lives but none of his neighbours was aware of the incident and his house was closed.
