Remanded over woman’s cellular phone
Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle yesterday remanded a 20-year-old man, who allegedly stole a woman’s cellular phone at Stabroek Market, when he appeared before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Kaldoughan Niles of 102 E Field, Sophia pleaded not guilty to the charge of larceny from the person when it was read to him.
It is alleged that on July 18 at Stabroek Market the accused stole from the person of Rosita Murray the said cellular phone.
According to Niles, he was walking through the market when he kicked something. The man said when he looked down he saw that it was a cellular phone and so he picked it up. Niles explained that a short while later he saw the virtual complainant (VC) and her brother who told him that he had stolen her phone and began beating him.
However, the VC explained that she was walking through the market when she lost her phone. The phone, she explained, was in the side pocket of her purse. Murray said that she was alerted that the accused, who was wearing a long sleeve blue shirt on the day of the incident, had stolen her phone. The woman said she approached him and demanded her phone and he attempted to escape.
After listening to both parties the acting chief magistrate refused Niles bail. The matter continues on August 2 in Court Two.
