Taxi dispatcher assaulted cop at station
- Court hears
Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson granted bail in the sum of $50,000 to a taxi service dispatcher who allegedly assaulted a police officer while being arrested at a police station.
Twenty-one-year-old Robin Ogle of A 51 East La Penitence pleaded not guilty to resisting lawful arrest, unlawfully assaulting police officer Wanda Savory and behaving disorderly in the public hearing when the charges were read to him on Monday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
It is alleged that on Monday morning at around 3, Ogle went to the East La Penitence Police Station and requested to see a prisoner who had been in a recent motor accident. After he had visited the friend he then demanded his release so he could seek medical treatment for injuries sustained in the accident. Savory then explained to Ogle that the relevant papers had to be processed before his friend could be released. She said that he refused to listen and started shouting and using indecent language and later went out into compound and continued his ranting. Savory said that when she attempted to arrest Ogle he slapped her hands away. She said that he then held onto her shoulders and shook her forcefully and another police officer came outside to assist her but Ogle also fought him. Ogle was soon arrested and charged for the offences.
However Ogle stated that all he had wanted was for his friend to be released from the lock-ups so that he could seek medical attention for his bleeding back and aching body.
The prosecution made no objection to bail and it was subsequently granted by the magistrate who transferred the case to Court 3 for November 6.

on October 10th, 2008 10:10 amHow come no comments?
i suspect that the cop was asseting her authority and that the friend became
impatient with her.
I pose that her recalticant atttitude had underlying motives.
This is a tempest in a tea pot, but as usual the police are always right.
Why did they not call in a medic or take the injured person for
medical attention?
Another abuse of power IMHO

on October 10th, 2008 5:37 pmIf they have a prisoner in custody and he/she is injured they have a right to seek medical attention. I would like to know why they did not take him to the hospital and let him obtain the medical attention that he needed ? All they had to do is escort him with an armed police. The police department are behaving like they have no sense or are they just acting out of frustration. He is a prisoner I agree, that does not prevent him from not being treated like a Human Being. Boy oh boy where is the Land of many Waters heading I would say into the Atlantic Ocean.
People are not safe any way and are treated with no R.E.S.P.E.C.T. I am so happy that I got the opportunity to leave Guyana.

on October 11th, 2008 12:09 pmAnother case of more in the mortar than the pestle. It appears from the report here that this defendant had left the building when this ‘resisting arrest and assault’ took place. Why did the police go outside after he left?
They usually lock up the gates after dark anyway!
