West Bank man remanded over assaulting cop

A Bagotville man who allegedly assaulted a police constable was remanded to prison when he appeared before Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle on Wednesday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Twenty-one-year-old Corwin Anderson of 108 David Rose Street, Bagotville, West Bank Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charge of unlawfully and maliciously assaulting Police Constable Marvin Marano.

It is alleged that on September 2 in Alexander Street, the accused was caught riding his bicycle up the one way and constable Marano who was in the vicinity told him about the offence he got punched in the face by Anderson.

However, Anderson said he was riding from Charlotte Street to Regent Street along what he had thought was a two-way street but was stopped and informed by Marano that it was  one-way. He said further that Marano then told him to let the air out from the bicycle tyres but he refused at first stating that he had a long way to go so he needed the bike. He said that after a few exchange of words he complied by flattening the tyres. Anderson said that he then proceeded to go on his way but Marano held on to the bike and while taking his hand off the saddle it accidentally hit Marano on the jaw.

Magistrate Ogle ordered that the accused be remanded to prison and to appear back in Court One on September 29.

I’m of the view that with all that was happening in the last five years between police and theives have had some genesis in more and more people becoming disrespectful for the laws and more importantly those who enforcse the laws in particular the polise. I’ve read of four such incidents in the last four weeks, hence I hereby recomend that we make examples of a few of thses individuals who assault and insult cops while in their execution of their duties. {5 yrs} imprisonment and a fine of $15.000.00. they must have respect for the laws.

I disagree with you bbukman and Faceboy it is easy for us to believe a police officer but policemen so often abuse and mistreat civilians and there are not put into jail. I think the Bagotville man should bonded out of jail.

Many Police officers in Guyana think they are above the law. They harass and disrespect citizens and expect a civil response. Well, many are not capable of responding civily. Many eons ago I was trained not to respond to personal insults. Are cops given this instruction today?

Sound like the policeman got what he was looking for…an arrest. Even if this guy was riding his bike down a one way street…why should he have to let the air out of his tires. That sounds like a very vindictive thing to do to a person. Policemen need proper training. A badge and a gun does not give you the right to harrass anyone.
