Disapproval over relationship leads to murder

– 16-year-old in custody

Disapproval of a boyfriend/ girlfriend relationship ended in murder late Tuesday night at Paradise, East Coast Demerara, when a 20-year-old man was stabbed to death.

Dexroy Dodson

Dexroy Dodson

The 16-year-old boy, who reportedly inflicted the fatal injury on Dexroy Dodson of 393 Paradise Housing Scheme is now in police custody. Police yesterday visited the scene in the company of the alleged attacker in search of the murder weapon, suspected to be a knife. However, according to reports nothing was found.
Reports reaching Stabroek News are that several days ago, the 16-year-old had threatened his sister over seeing Dodson.

However, Dodson and the girl who is said to be 15 years old, met as usual near a roadside shop and were later seen sitting on a bench a short distance away chatting. Some time before 11 pm, the attacker, who was allegedly hiding in the vicinity, pounced from behind a lamppost opposite the bench the two were sitting on. After slapping his sister, he allegedly stabbed Dodson in the chest.

Wounded, Dodson made a desperate attempt to reach his home located some four house lots away but collapsed near a trench, a few metres away. He was found face down, the front of the white vest he was wearing drenched in blood.

After inflicting the injury, the attacker fled the area but this morning turned up at the Cove and John Police Station in the company of his mother. She, along with her daughter, was questioned by the police following the incident.

When this newspaper arrived in the village, several of the man’s relatives along with residents were gathered near the roadside shop, which he had frequented, talking about the incident.

His great aunt, Berna Wilson said Dodson had gone to Paradise towards the latter part of June, when her husband passed away.

She said that on Tuesday night around 7:45, she passed her great nephew and his girlfriend sitting on a bench at the side of the road, chatting.

According to Wilson, he had told her that he would be going home shortly but they were still sitting there just before 9 pm, as she saw them when a bus passed through the area.

The woman recalled that she had asked the man’s father for him.

She said that prior to the discovery of her great nephew’s body, the girl had passed her home twice and it appeared as though she was looking for Dodson. When the body was found, she said, it was already stiff.
A still distraught, Marlon Dodson told this newspaper that his son was at his home in Bachelor’s Adventure on Monday and he seemed his usual self. He said he was unaware that his son was involved with the teenaged girl.

Cell phone

He said he visited Wilson on Tuesday night and they had “a gaff”.

“I collect he [Dodson] bicycle and went out. When I coming back I did see two people sitting on de bench but didn’t know was de two of them,” he recalled adding he later decided that it was time to go home.

“When I walking out, I decide fuh ring he phone and I hear it nearby suh I turn back and find it in the bush by a lantern post,” he said, adding that seconds later he spotted “he [Dodson] by the trench corner” and quickly summoned his aunt, telling her to come and see something. When she arrived he said, “look Magga Man down there”.

The man said that although the area where his son’s body was found is well lit no one recalled seeing or hearing anything.

He said he visited the girl’s home yesterday and he was told that the attacker had been hiding and then emerged and slapped his sister, then fired what appeared to be a cuff at Dodson.

He said it would appear that the girl ran away before Dodson was stabbed. He said she told him that she “thought that he was cuffed and did not know he was stabbed”.

Stabroek News attempted to speak to the mother of the two teens but she said that she could not since she was running late for a visit to the station where the lad is being held.

‘A terror’

Residents yesterday described Dodson’s attacker as a terror, stressing that he was “ignorant and very aggressive”. They expressed anger that Dodson met his death in such a tragic way.

Stabroek News was told that Dodson had no known problems with anyone and trouble began last Sunday when his assailant voiced his disapproval at him speaking to his young sister. The two began seeing each other about three weeks ago.

Sharon, a woman who operates a small shop as the side of the road, recalled that she left Dodson at her stall around 6:30 Tuesday night after the area was hit by a blackout.

“I tell he man I going in due to the blackout, but he does normally keep me company everyday till I lock up,” she said, adding that she left him standing at the side of the road and went home.

“He was very close to me man. He was like a son,” the woman said.

Sharon described Dodson as a jovial person who never showed disrespect to anyone.

Dodson also leaves to mourn his mother Lavern Fortune and six siblings.

    This is a tragedy.

I give my deepest sympathy to the family of the victim.

This young man who attack Dexroy is indeed ignorant.

Bad choices once again. Youths must understand that life is such, disagreement comes. It was not his right to kill the young man over seeing his sister with him.

Where is the father, that he had to be so over protective of his sister?

The culture of confrontation, arguement, and violence to solve problems is primitive.Education is the key .it should start at home, continue in school and reinforced by society. We need to change the way we solve problems,by cultivating a different nindset, that would reduce conflicts and misunderstanding.
We have to make that choice. The ego wants to be assertive, but we have to cultivate humility and reason and recognise that any alternative solution would have serious reprecussions.

In the days of PNC rule, these senseless killings never existed. The youths had an opportunities in the GNS to master a skill. This government has no programs and no hope for the youths who drop out of school.

The streets are their last hope. Fineman is gone, but his recruits will rise to take up the void.

This is the cycle of life when a government neglects it’s youth.

If sports and athletics are promoted and sponsored nation wide it will aleviate some of the problems. Also, if tourism is a product the country wants to develop, then entertainment at every level is needed for the tourist sector. The government needs to cut the red tape and favoritism and allow entrepreneurship to florish in the country. All the concessions are given to the Indians, and the Indians are only employing their own kind.

The country now potrays everything Indian. Here in North America most people think that Guyana is an Indian nation. Where is the diversity?

Burnham never direspected any culture in Guyana.

What athletics did we have in Burnham’s time? Those days every sport enterest was sponsored by the participant themselves, if you like football, you had to provide your own boots, hose, etcc. When last GFC or GCC had a track event?Lots of youths in those days who weren’t forced to join the GNS, were encouraged to plant something anywhere, thus the squatting became uncontrollable, that’s how we now have Sophia areas A-Z, East and West Ruimveldt Front Rd., Rasville, here there and everywhere, don’t even have time to mention all over. Today the govt regularised and slowed the squatting by giving people house lots to build their homes and laws against wanton squatting, so the youths now turn to crime cause they can’t plant whereever they chose no more.

The youths in Guyana now have access to primetime hip-hop tv from the U.S that’s leading them astray.
The culture in Guyana is being destroyed by hip-hop music and videos. Fourteen and fifteen years old watch and listen to rappers rapping about violence, guns and easy money and they think it’s cool, they want to be like them.
However, rapping is not the problem, alot of these teens think that’s the way these rappers live and since they want to be like them, they start stealing and commmit robberies with guns and other weapons so they can buy cool jewelry and clothing. The girls are now dressing like the girls in the music videos and parents now are experiencing a more difficult time keeping their teens in check.
The school system does not help alot since now they have teens teaching teens in high schools, which leads to students not having respect for teachers.
There are no decent recreational facilities for teens hang out and socialize anymore. Greedy businessmen bought and destroy all the movie theaters and built more rum shops and hotels and it goes on and on…

What happened here is that tiger sent the comment and thought it did not go thru (because of the usual delay to moderate it), so he sent it back in his other name, not knowing they would both come thru. Just look at the time difference they were sent - tiger 4.56 pm, malcolmx 4.59 pm. This is not “odd”, this is deliberate and by the same person.
Carl boy we have to be careful here.

well first i must say deepest sympathy to the family of Dexroy Dodson you were too young to loose your life over such a foolish act .

I am so tired of so many young black men taking the lives of other black men wether its in guyana or the united states its time for a chage.

why is this happening we are suppose to look out for one another and help build our black race to make it the best it can be but due to ignorance we will always fail and be at the bottom of the pit.

once again my deepest sympathy to the family of dexroy dodson i know it wount be easy but your son is in a better place may he rest in peace..,,

hope my words makes a great difference with the young black men around
    the world

    sincerely miss ulee

My grandmother use to say the devil dose take them over. But seems some of the youth of Guyana are loss. And if something is not done, soon we will have many more FINEMAN on our hands. That means (parents, church, temple, moss and the government) have to work together to find a solution before it’s to late.

Mackydog, I think everyone can manipulate such coincident. It is not a crime.

It is his choice. Not because he rebuked you, mean you are going to HIGHLIGHT the fact he is using another name.

Moreover, if he had wanted to hide, I think his wordings would have been written differently.

    Stop belittling others. :p :)

You are humorous, but don’t be distraught.

Parenting skills are practically non existent in most of these cases. We see mothers working to take care of the children and absent fathers. These children are left alone to take care of younger siblings and set their own rules.

I do not fault the brother for watching out for his younger sister. The way he went about it was wrong and very tragic, for him and the young man that was killed. He acted the best way his 16 year old brain and emotions were capable off. As adults it’s easy for us to call him a murderer and condem him for the rest of his life. In my opinion, he made a mistake. He was assuming his parents responsibilities, why shouldn’t they be held accountable for his actions to some extent?

It’ tragic, this young man die; but if he was such a good man, what was he doing with a fifteen year old. She should forever carry this man death and her brother going to jail with her. At fifteen she should have been home.

I know its frowned upon to speak badly of the dead and by no means am i saying he deserved his fate, but as to blame a 15 yr old child and not the adult is beyond me…. Yes she should be home but the young man should be looking at women more of his age and not taking advantage of CHILDREN….. thats the problem in guyana just because its done alot doesnt make it OKAY……. NO 20yr old should be attracted or looking to date or kissing a 15 yr old girl………

im sorry her brother is as ‘ignorant’ thought thats not the correct term, more like hot headed to do something so stupid but the victim should have realised that 15 is way too young and if he was treatened before really looked at his choices too………… poor judgement on ALL of parties involved…….

Education is the key to success .People act like animals because of lack of knowledge.Guyanese ,it is time to start playing an active role in your children’s lives .Start teaching young men and women morals, encourage them to focus on their education so that they can be of value to their nation.Mothers teach your daughters how to remain pure and fathers teach your sons how to respect themselves and others, especially women. My prayers go out for both parents.May God take control in their hours of need.

    Charriot you got it right:
You said in the days of PNC rule, these senseless killings never existed.
We had the kick down the door bandit which was more meaningfuf during PNC time.GNS was a Burnham failure. You blame the PPPC for youths dropping out of school.I now ask you this very important question. Why is it only one section of youths comitting these crimes? How many other youths of different races cant find jobs but dont revert to a life of crime and killings? Was it the Government that neglected Fineman and Skinny? This lad took it upon himself to kill the guy his sister loves. He killed the guy because he did not like him for his sister. What the Government has to do with that.Simply put, He is a killa and dats all there is to it.
