East Bank couple terrorized, robbed

An East Bank Demerara (EBD) couple was on Thursday night terrorized by two men who came calling at their business for an aerated drink but instead confronted them with a gun and cutlass before fleeing with cash.

Errol Ming, 56, of Golden Grove, EBD who was gun butted during the attack was treated at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre and later sent away.

According to a police release Ming was sitting on his veranda around 7:15 pm when the two men approached on the pretext of purchasing an aerated drink. The man left to get it and upon his return he was held at gunpoint by the men who demanded cash.

The release added that Ming’s wife who was inside the house handed over $250,000 cash to the bandits who escaped after hitting Ming in the head with a handgun.

When Stabroek News spoke with the businessman yesterday he denied that the sum stated to the police was handed over to the bandits. According to him the men got away with $31, 000.

Recounting what transpired that night, Ming said that he operates a small business at his home. Two men came and requested a one litre “Coke”. The man told this newspaper that he went into the refrigerator for the beverage and when he turned around he saw the men armed with a gun and a cutlass respectively.

According to him, one of the men gun-butted him during a scuffle while the other placed the cutlass to his wife’s neck and demanded money.

He said that he is still feeling the effects of the gun butt.
This was the first robbery the businessman has ever experienced.
Police investigations are continuing.

How can you protect yourself from these thieves? Robberies seems to be escalating at an alarming rate and little or nothing is being done abate it. An arrest must be put to this trend or Guyana is going to be permanently traumatised and people are going to find it difficult to trust each other, actually this has started to happen already.

There needs to be a community response to this trend because the police does not have a grip on this situation. There must be active community policing groups to protect neighbourhood or things are going to get worst.

crime continues in guyana.i feel that the president must take the responsibility to stop the crime.a private agency must be employed, either foreign or local to work with the police force.cameras must be placed on all major highways or any other technology that will monitor activities on the highways and other areas.laws needs to be updated in guyana.if the president cannot do the job he must resign and give some one else a chance.the indians who put the ppp in power must look for an alternative.i think corbin, sharma ravi dev or any other party can do a better job.all the political parties in guyana must come together now and go to the election as one party and get rid of the ppp.

It is not fair to blame the President for every little thing that happens in Guyana. Crime against businesses have been going on for some time now. People in Guyana need to spend some time and yes, money to ensure their own security, such as alarm systems and surveillance cameras, to assist in crime deterance.

Whenever these criminals are caught their hands should be chopped off for stealing. Citizens are trying to survive the best way they know how and these criminals are going around reeking havoc on their lives.

Business places need closed circuit televisions/cameras in Guyana. It’s a security investment businessmen, come on. We can no longer blame fineman for everything. Get your act together. Criminals know that the foolice force is compromised so they have no respect for them neither do they care.

So give everybody guns, do away with the foolice force & courts & return to the days of the wild west & survival of the fittest or fastest.
The incompetence of the authorities & the prevalence of lawlessness starting from the “woman” who threw the court order over her shoulders are to blame for our current state. Added to the KNOWN corruption in places that should be stamping it out.
I don’t know why I’m actually responding to this but……

The police, the courts and the Govt. are too lenient with criminals. Many youths are walking around with hand guns tucked in their waist in Guyana. Guns are freely available to purchase for $50,000 and the police knows about this but they are not doing anything.
There will be no end to crime in Guyana.

I agree with Mack , the president cannot be blamed for the crime situation in guyana, He has done more than any other presidents to improve the security in guyana by spending millions of dollars for the GPF and ror training,People needs to start being more aware of their surroundings and report any illegal activities rather than throwing blame left right or center !!!!!!!!!

The courts should adopt the three strikes rule. Most of these thieves are habitual offenders who need to be off the streets. The police should be more vigilant about shutting down drug houses/yards and places where guns/ammuniton are sold. If the man in the street knows where these places, no doubt the police know also. They should make it frustrating for them to set up their stinking drugs and weapons trade.

i will keep sayiny it , police patrols is what is needed , the robberies would’nt go away but will reduce the prevelance in this type of criminal activities, i call on the min. of home affairs to provide the PF WITH vehicles to patrol the city and it’s environs on a daily basis, day and night police patrols.

How can you protect yourself from thieves in Guyana? Regard everyone you encounter as a potential thief, especially when there are two persons or more before you ,and when nobody else is around.

crimes cannot be considered as little things.so it is fair to say that the ruling party and the police cannot solve the crime situation in guyana.well spend the money by paying a private agency to do the job.there are cases where the police are committing crimes in guyana.i blame my fellow indians now for putting a party in power which is inefficient.indians are supporting the ppp party blindly.wake up indians before it is too late.find an alternative party to rule your country.indians believe in GOD and are capitalist.you need a capitalist party that believes in social justice..
