Guards caught stealing from employer
Berbice businessman had been puzzled by losses
Two Berbice security guards who have been stealing from their employer for over a year were yesterday morning caught red-handed when the man acting on a hunch visited his business and found one of them with a haversack filled with items on his way home.

The watchman was on his way home with these articles, valued over $7,000, when he was caught red-handed.
Subsequent searches of the guards’ homes unearthed some $1.2M in stolen items.
The discovery by Roopnarine Ramnauth of one seven-pound tin of Fern Leaf milk, two bottles of chocolate milk, packets of curry powder and one bottle of Sunny Delight in the employee’s bag sparked the searches of the homes of the men by the police and items were discovered under beds, in suitcases and elsewhere.
Yesterday, Ramnauth was still in shock over the discovery as he told Stabroek News he could not understand how one of the men, who has been working with him for two years and whom he has known for several years, could have stolen from him for over a year. He said the pilfering almost led to the collapse of his business. The man, who owns the Narines General Store at Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, from which he operates wholesale and retail outlets with a bond attached and the N&N Supermarket at Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice, said that only on Saturday night he and his wife were trying to figure out how their business was going downhill.
“We were trying to find out what was happening, we say it is the supermarket because we open it last October and I use to take secret stock of the items in the supermarket but finding nothing missing. So we wondering what direction the business taking,” the man told this newspaper.
He averages that he had lost in excess of $8M during the period the stealing started.
Hunch
The man told Stabroek News that he woke up early yesterday morning and he felt that something was not right. “I usually take my exercise inside but I decided to go outside and ride this morning and I say leh me pass by me business place.” He said that as he approached his business place at around 5:30 am he observed that the watchman, who has been working for him for about two months, but whose duty ends at 6 am, was leaving the premises. When asked why he was leaving so early the man said he wanted to use the toilet. The businessman said he also observed that the man had a packed haversack and he decided to search it.

Roopnarine Ramnauth and his wife standing next to the canter with the booty that was recovered from one of the watchmen’s premises.
“I tell he leh me see what he have in the back and he say ‘boss man is [name of the other guard] give me lil things’ but I tell he I still want see and when he open the bag I see the things.”
The man said that he immediately contacted the police. He said when the police arrived they proceeded to search the first watchman’s house where items worth about $200,000 were discovered under beds and in suitcases.
But it was during the search of the second watchman’s home that some $1M worth of items was found. This watchman was described as a “trusted person.”
“From the things we find in he house I figure that this thing going on for over a year because some of the things we ent even get them in stock anymore, we don’t get them and it mean that he thief them since last year.”
As the items were being found and removed from the man’s house many villagers came out and some of them along with Ramnauth’s relatives were taunting the obviously ashamed watchman who stood with his head bowed. Many of them asked him how he could have stolen from Ramnauth who trusted him.
Stabroek News approached the man as he stood outside his home where several sacks of rice, large bottles of oil, tins of milk and other items were placed, and when asked for a comment he said he was sorry he stole from Ramnauth adding that he got back his “things I just want the story done.”
Suspicious
Ramnauth said earlier this year he began to suspect that the watchman might be stealing from him but he had no proof. “He is the mastermind and I suspect it but I ent had no proof. You know whenever we had problems with any watchman he use to pick and choose who he want to work with him suh now I suspect he hire people who woulda thief with he.”
He said when he hired the man, whom he paid $8,000 a week, he was living in an unfinished concrete house. “All I see is this man done he house, it paint up, get panel doors and if you see fancy things inside. Where he get that money from?”
His suspicion grew when within the last few months the man bought a car, a canter truck and started a hollow block building business.
But the man said even though he suspected he had no proof and did not want to accuse his employee wrongfully.
And while the watchman continued to prosper Ramnauth said that his business was going down the drain.
He said on several occasions he would observe that cartoons of items were opened and a few were missing and he would ask his employees why they were doing retail sales in such a manner. They would deny that they were the ones who were opening the cartoons but Ramnauth said he had no other answer as he still had no proof of anyone entering the premises after he would have closed it in the evening.
He has since discovered that the men removed a large padlock from an unused door and would use the bottom half of the two-part door to gain entry. He said the padlock was covered by a large tarpaulin and it was only yesterday morning in an attempt to find out how the men entered the bond that he discovered the padlock missing
From all indications the watchman, the one described as the ‘mastermind’, stole the items and took them to another location to be sold.
Ramnauth said that the man through his brothers has since offered to pay him $2M to settle the matter. “If he got two million dollar just like that to give me you could imagine how much money he been making all this time,” the man said.
He said that he hopes that justice would be served in this case while mentioning another matter where a former employee stole $100,000 from him.
“This man confess everything to the police and the matter just dragging out in court, no trial nothing ent start and is like over five months now,” the man said.
The two guards were led away yesterday in handcuffs and taken into custody at the Fort Wellington Police Station.

on September 22nd, 2008 6:12 amStealing (period) is wrong and indefensible. However, society has to be fair with its criticisms in this regard. There is a dichotomy of “lil & big t’ief’. We prosecute those who steal from behind a gun, but embrace those who wreak havoc from behind their desks? Those white collar criminals, like your CEOs, whose personal imports are ‘covered’ as companies expenses. This is apart from the many ‘known and approved’ allowances. What about when they use company vehicles (driven by poor, suffering employees) to transport personal effects? But that same struggling, hand-to-mouth, poor-tail employee has to find money from his own VAT-suffocating $$$ to pay a cart to carry home his building materials. The small man is powerless.
There is one difference between the (Chief Executive) criminal who siphons off millions and the (Common External) criminal; the instrument - one uses a pen and the other a gun/knife.
This man should be prosecuted, but so too should those in high places. ALL thieves cause mayhem.

In reply to the above comment on September 22nd, 2008 9:07 am:Owen I agree with you, however, the desk thief is harder to catch. If employees know who the desk thieves are and those using public vehicles for there own private use, it should be reported. You also have to take into consideration, that steeling from the Government and employer in Guyana is considered acceptable behavior for a long time. What has to happen is an education process, which would let people understand that stealing from the Government, or your employer is like stealing from yourself, as the folks not getting the goods or services, when all is said and done, is you.

In reply to the above comment on September 22nd, 2008 11:02 am:Report the thief behind the desk to who?…His superior?…. who has always been the biggest thief and know the system inside out. The behind-the-desk thief is allowed these shenanigans as long as his boss gets his share.
If you are honest about this, there should be no weathy Gov’t employees period, because the numbers and the dollars in the economy do not permit for such.
Great observation Owen.

Stealing is always bad/wrong but what surprises me in Guyana is that only when then poor steals and get caught he is publicly embarrassed. In Guyana if you steal anything under a Million dollars you are surely going to jail but if the loot is a mil plus nobody will know and you definitely ain’t going to jail.

There is a saying — you cannot work at a bakery store and going outside to purchase the same bread in which you are making.
I am not in agreeance with what the guards did to their boss– but there must be another hidden agenda behind it.
The boss mentioned that is business was falling to peices because of that, I think he needs to check his accounts properly.
I donot think the guys could have stolen that vast amount.
Neverthless, I think they need minimal penalty and to understand what trust his.

When I saw the first picture I thought it was just some milk and a sweet drink, but this man was actually in the process of ruining his employers business.
To think that he has the nerve to say that “he got back his thing” and ” I just want the story done.” tells me that he is only sorry that he got caught.

on September 22nd, 2008 9:08 amHere’s a comment to Joe Joe … your comment is very disappointing. How in God’s name can you support and encourage those who covets others property. It is this very attitude that leads our brothers and sisters to move on to bigger crimes. So yes, In Guyana, we have to work one day for some rice, another day for some stew, the following day for some meat… do you not have to slave in the U.S,A , Canada, etc. doing jobs that you would never do back home to survive???
Or is it, that life is so easy elsewhere and Guyana is the most difficult place on eath, so we are encouraged to steal??? If you are a security guard doing shift work, I’m sure there would be a little spare time for gardening, have a few heads of cattle, maybe some poultry to supplement your income. Some people would prefer to hang their hats where it can’t reach. Ambition is good , but it must be legitimate.

on September 22nd, 2008 10:01 amOk my turn from a Social Worker perspective.
Is $8,000.00 a week enough to take care of those two families? Did the employer take into consideration the family composition and cost of living before he calculated their wages? What about them putting their lives at risk by guarding his business? I am pretty sure if they were killed on duty, their family would not receive 2M each. I am not condoning them stealing. It’s wrong! I think the employer should have had a chat with both of them and yes call in the police but be discreet about it. The present state of Guyana is that the rich will live and the poor will starve to death. It’s a very sad situation. I actually feel sorry that they were exposed like this.
What about the government officials that supposedly took money to build houses at Ogle. I never heard about an investigation of that or anyone being embarrassed publicly.

Do you honestly believe 32, 000 a month can pay for electricity, food, clothing, water, mortgage etc.
I am not condoning thieving I am looking at the broader picture!!

on September 22nd, 2008 10:31 amIt is so sad to know that the security guards were caught and that they actually had to be stealing. This is to show that their pay was small and that they were also discontented with same. This is just what happened to a couple of them. What about those who are still out there doing same. You should learn from this and stop because—” moon ah run till day ketch ham”. Be careful and remember that GOD forbids stealing.

Oh yea this is a true story and if I say too much more everybody in Guyana would know who I’m talking about.
Some years later, that same Guyanese dude was escorted, by the FBI in handcuffs, from behind his desk at the company where he worked here in the USA. He is now doing time in Federal prison and yes it appears that Guyana was his training ground. Today I’m sure his family is wondering ’some training’…huh?

on September 22nd, 2008 3:08 pm.I think businesspeople in Guyana have to start managing their business properly by investing in a POS system and start doing proper monthly inventory. In that way you are sure to know if you are missing inventory. If you are loosing it is time to change your system. You can’t wait until after two years to realize that things are going out the back door and you don’t know.

on September 22nd, 2008 3:19 pmBased on the Holy Bible Princepal,Stealing period, is wrong with a capital ‘W’. not only did these two men sinned but they broke the law of the land {Guyana} It’s a fact that we have a lot of theives behind dest that need to be caught too. The government two months ago interduced polograph testing for some employees of the Custom’s Anti Narcotics Unit and based on the result of those tests a number of persons were dismissed. If you ask me, I’ll say it’s one good way to help rid soceity of corrupt officials. Let’s now take this polograph testing to the Police Force and see what happen there and then on to the Hospitals, Schools and other government offices eg: DPP, GPO, Housing etc including both OPs. After we would have caught the White Collar Criminals then we’ll go after the small man in the street. Let us not stop at CANU, let us continue with all government employees. {The Ministers and their close associates} We’ll set examples with those at the top and let those at the bottom follow. In conculsion, these two individuals should fact the full extent of the law for their actions.

In reply to the above comment on September 23rd, 2008 5:02 am:I know a lot of successful people, who never thief. You have the wrong Idea Therese. I hope you dont teach your children what you preach.? Honesty starts at home. It’s not yours, it’s someone else’s. Let us teach our children that this kind of thing is not correct.Stop watching the boss, stop counting the boss money and do your work. That’s a common problem with employees , instead of doing your job well, you spend all day COUNTING HOW MUCH MONEY THE BOSS MAKES.
You dont count Rent, Insurance, Taxes, Telephone & electric , ,transportation, etc. etc. etc. You dont know about the many nights he sit up thinking how he’s going to get money to pay all his bills. Not to mention The THIEFMAN STEALING HIS INVENTORY. You see you only look at the money dats coming it, You are not a business person, you dont know about what it takes to run a business, you dont know about the headaches in business, My suggestion is TEACH YOUR CHILDREN NOT TO STEAL,; and they will become better men and women in this world.Maybe they too will become successful businessmen and women.THERESA the best of us , and most of us who are very successful did not steal. So once again lets teach the young ones that stealing is not RIGHT. Someone bigger than the boss is watching, and you’re paying for it right now in your daily struggle with life.

on September 22nd, 2008 4:31 pmThis has to be the article , that has the funniest comments. No it is not right to steal, if you steal and get caught, it’s not ow me God give he a break. He get caught , let him deal with the consequences. God bless the man who pays wages. If you dont like the pay, or you think the boss too cheap, LEAVE THE JOB.
Go look for another one that pays you better. Instead of encouraging them to steal, let them try and better themselves, read, go to night school, take some kind of trade, dont thief the boss stuff to open you own store. And even if you took a little bit and did’nt get caught, you see , you keep getting more brave and continue to steal more and more., the boss take off he own shirt and pants, and give you, he give you things for your families, every week you get a care package. When you want to borrow, who do you ask,? THE BANK?When yu son or daughter get married, who help you?, Yu MUMA, or yu Dadi. No Me the bass help you. When you family got to go to the doctor, who help yu?, Me the Bass.
When I kill a goat, dont you get meat.? Who buy yu toys for you children, It’s me the Bossman. When yu got problem, who yu does go to, is it not you ,who come to me to lend an ear, or support, .Am I only your Boss? or am I not your friend?.
If I eating my roti, dont I break half and give you? Now that is a good Guyanese Boss, and dont matter what , all a we cant be BOSS. Dont you see the ship only got I captain?Come on I cant ask the police to give you a break, You going to jail.
That is not eye pass, that is Ra– pass.Dont thief, they have some very good bosses, who treat workers like family. No relation to the store owner.Just my two cents. You see if the bass dont take this serious, everybody will want to work for this not so serious boss. Got to make you an example, in order to drive some fear
in the other guards. AMEN. I rest my case. NEXT.

We were’nt passing the sentances on these two cons because we’ll leave that for the courts to do, however, we were condeming their action. We all stole at some time or the other, what? A G/T $1000.00 worth but these two crooks stole 3.3 million dollars from the man who employed them and treated them like family. This man {employer} too is trying very hard and honestly to make ends meet for his family. Bearing in mind that one of the theives opened his own business, bought two vehicles completed his home and even managed to save some two millions dollars which he now wants to return to have the matter settle. Their jobs were to protect, not rob.

In reply to the above comment on September 23rd, 2008 11:09 am:You know , We have a two fold situation here. OK so they stole, large amounts for a very long time, so much so that they even got a lot of inventory in their homes. That is not all they stole, they sell and disposed a lot of THE MERCHANDISE. Lets ask ourselves a question, stilling condemming what the guards did, WHY DID IT TAKE THE BOSS SO LONG TO REALISE THAT he is missing stuff??? You know what, what goes around comes around, He must have been buying and dealing in contraband( INVENTORY THAT’S NOT HIS).But I dont know this for sure, and SUSPICION IS THE BLACKEST LIE. I’m only giving a heads up.
An honest boss would have catch him a long long time ago.I have been a businessman for 50 years of my life, both in Guyana, and Manhattan, selling millions of US dollars a year. In New York I have had all kind of people, for all over the world working for me, and some of them “DE HAND FASS”, and some of them are honest to the bone. The biggest thief I had was a Guyanese named
E—-, I took him to my big house in LOng Island, lent him my truck, gave him a whole master bedroom suite(TOP OF THE LINE), because one of the guys hinted to me that he had no furniture, and his wife got a baby, and they were sleeping on the floor. You know what He was the biggest thief, and I personally caught him, He’s is now in Jail, not for stealing my stuff, I let him go. He was a coolieman just like me,( I did’nt let him go because he was like me, I never got any one arrested, any race , for stealing or shoplifting, I always say go home , dont come back, or dont let me see you in this store again, now he R— de in jail, not for stealing, something biggerThe ones that steal did not do much in life for themselves, the innocent ones, are are all doing good. Yes I’m am in touch with all of the Local ones that worked for me.My prayers for them are answered. May god bless them, and fill their pockets. Buy the way the only job I ever had was on the Sugar Estate as a clerk for 6.00 a week in 1955.That is now
3 us cents. From a butcher, slaughterer, a photographer, to one of the largest
business man in my field,. in the largest city of the world. I condemn stealing.
God give us a brain to use, I had to leave High School to go to work. Some of us had a hard life, working 365 days a year 16 hours a day.
Believe me you got thieves on both side of the fence; but the boss will always be the boss; and like I said previously “DONT WATCH THE BOSS< AND HOW MUCH MONEY HE”S MAKING ETC>
Buy the way , I did steal among other fruits MANGOES in Bagotstown, where I grew up. God has blessed me. And I am grateful to HIM/HER. More businessmen should learn that it’s the people who put them where they are and GIVE BACK to the community. Owen Khan, Fld.

on September 22nd, 2008 8:28 pmReading this story and some of the comments, I realised I am thankful for “conscience.”
Today I took my daughter shopping, she choose a blazer, a braclet and a pair of earrings. After paying and on our way to the car she commented that was not so expensive. At this point I checked the bill to see the sale prices of the items we purchased. What do you know, the cashier did not ring in the cost of the blazer.
Immediatedly we turned around to go back into the store to speak to the cashier. After explaining to her that she did not charge for the blazer she thanked us and said it was wonderful to see us returing to pay for the item.
This story could have gone two ways…. I could have said it my lucky day and we got a free blazer. We could have said it’s the cashier’s fault for not ringing in the blazer and let her pay for it.
My point is, we have an obligation to teach and show by example how to be moral and responsible in this society. We can’t take at our own free will that which does not belong to us. We owe loyalty to those that employ us and pay us a wage for services rendered. What sort of valules do we teach our children if we steal from others so we can live in a big fancy house with a nice car and expensive furniture.
Shame and disgrace to the two guards that stole from their employer and thought it was the right thing to do. Shame on their familes that lived so freely off of the stolen loot.
Payback is a bitch as we often hear, reguardless if it’s here, or as religious zealots say, in heaven.
