Medor explains estrangement from mother

‘I want to take care of her,’ he says

What could have kept a son and mother separated for more than 40 years?

Sylvester Medor who recently returned to Guyana for the second time in two years in search of his mother said that when he was a child, she had walked out on him and left him with one relative after the other.

However, he said, “she is now in her twilight years and is not the worst person in the world and I don’t want what she has. I only want to take good care of her.”

Medor had approached the police and the media last month, after he could neither find his mother, Noelina Prospere-Medor, nor her caretakers when he returned to Guyana.
As different versions of the story unfolded, many have questioned the four-decade gap.

Medor, 51, from his London home on Friday, told Stabroek News that as a boy he spent most of his time with his grandmother. After she died, he went to live with an aunt and at one time, he was with his father. Finally, he said, he stayed with his mother’s sister, who practically saved his life even though she had six children of her own.

According to him, his mother and father had split up and she had married another man with whom he did not get along.

Medor said when he was 17, his mother told him that she was going to Guyana to live with her husband. “She asked me if I wanted to come and because I didn’t know anyone there or had no idea where I was going, I stayed alone in the UK,” he said.

It was not until December last year that Medor made his first visit to Guyana where he saw his mother after such a long time.

“When I went to see her she didn’t recognize me. She kept looking at me, but could only remember my voice,” he said.

He said that while his mother stayed at the Albouystown house after she and her husband separated, he sent money for her maintenance. At that time, he said, the woman was being cared for by his stepfather’s son, who had been made Power of Attorney, to look after her welfare.

According to him, it was only at that point that Hubert Alexander came into the picture. Alexander was responsible for Prospere-Medor when she was found at the Craig apartment last weekend. He has since openly admitted that he had instructed his wife not to release any information to anyone about the woman’s whereabouts.

Despite the long story, which led to the way things are today, Medor said, he intends to do all he can to ensure that his mother is happy and comfortable.

“I don’t want to degrade my mother because she is still my mother at the end of the day. Everyone makes mistakes and I won’t put her down for that. I made a choice to stay. I don’t dislike her for that… It’s my chance to give something back to her. I just don’t want her to suffer no more,” the man said.

He observed that it has been heartrending that people have seen him as wanting a property that doesn’t even belong to his mother legally as yet, when he was already happy with his family in the United Kingdom. He insisted that he just wanted to take care of his mother in her twilight years in the best way he could.

Property possession
Medor has been accused by his mother’s former caretakers of wanting to take possession of a property she once occupied, which was apparently part of a settlement between her and her ex-husband. But Medor said it was the caretaker, who only came into the picture last year, who had plans for the house and was upset with him for not giving in to his demands to send large amounts of money.

“I am not lying. I don’t want people to think I want any property. It is just not my interest,” the man said.

He questioned why the police had not made attempts to arrest and charge Alexander and his wife and said he has since contacted Commissioner of Police (ag) Henry Greene in this regard.

Medor has asked the Human Services Ministry to take responsibility for his mother and her needs until he returns to Guyana in another eight weeks to make more permanent arrangements.

This man does not need the property,he has more than that,he does’nt even know anything about Guyana, when people were judging the man, they thought that he was a Guyanese, and they did’t know anything about the man and his mother now you can see who wants the woman’s property,(Alexander)he should not be allowed anywwhere near that woman, between he and his father that woman will end up with nothing,Medor has to see that his mother gets her share of the property.

Medor, tell them all to go to hell! You do not owe the public an explanation. Do what you want to do for your mother, it’s between you, your mother and your God!

Dear Editor, I wrote and commented a few days ago on the plight this man might had gone through during his life. Half of those who commented on this story had all sort of negative things to say and were quick to pass judgement with out knowing the facts. Here we now have three sides to this case, The man’s side, the care taker’s side and the true. I believed and accepted his explaination. THANKS.

Look! I do not know beyond the shadow of a doubt that you are not seeking somethings but what these people did was criminal and there should be some consequences….. Some will say you are living overseas so you do not need anything in Guyana but living overseas does not mean that you have everything to your comfort and need nothing.. I am praying that your actions are noble and in the best interest of your mother….However, the caretakers most not be given anything because you would be rewarding them for the wrong they have done..SHAME on them.

ANYWAYS, YOU BE VERY CAREFUL WHILE YOU ARE THERE,,UNDERSTAND WHERE I AM COMING FROM?????

I was right, I knew there had to be some reason why Mr Medor stayed out of touch with hs mother for 40 years …anyway, if as he s saying he wishes to care for her and she s going to accept the same, then I do hope all well that end well

    Mr. Medor,

I am one of those writers just like Alexis, who do not believe u with some things, I know for a fact that the caretaker and his wife were wrong in hideing the whereabouts of your mother, they should be investigated, I am upset when I saw the condition your mom was living in, not one that she placed herself into.

I have read your statement where u stated that ur mom left you with others, this is what ur saying, she cannot defend her actions now, this story has truths, lies, half truths and whole lies all around.

My problem I have with u is simple this, ur mom wanted u, if not, she could have had an abortion, she could have place u up for adoption, instead, she left u with a grandmother, u don’t really know the reason why, u also stated that ur mom asked u to come with her to Guyana, u refused, u know the reason why, after all those years, I cannot comprehend how a grown adult could not 4give a parent , if what u stated is so and allowed all those yrs to pass without a visit, 40 years are really long. I wished I had my mom alive, she was very strick with us, and we all thanked her 4 it, our dad never supported us, not even a doll at Christmas, we still loved him, I took care of him financially, sending barrels u name it, every year I vacationed in Guyana to be near him, I 4gived him, never brought up the subject to him, as soon as I received the message that he was ill I took time off from my job and stayed in Guyana, we played cards and six hours after he passed, I was devasted, it took me yrs to allowed his spirit to rest, so explain ur actions to others not me. u better see how u can make it up to her, u can always have other women in ur life, u cannot have many mothers.

Alexis, ur story is really a tear sheading one, u had it terrible without a mom in ur life, at 6 months, and believe u me, ur not the only one, so don’t take it 2 hard, I hope Mr. Medor reads ur blog, that there are some who don’t have a mom alive, to hold and kiss her, now the tables r turn and ur taking care of your sister, how wonderful of u, keep it up. Mr. Medor stated that he has to be in hospital for surgery, how sick is he, that he cannot travel back to Guyana, he’s so ill, that he has the time to read and reply to bloggers. Get on the plane Mr. Medor. All the best Alexis
