Son disturbed at conditions under which mother found

The news of his mother being found has not brought relief to Sylvester Medor who recently came to Guyana in search of her, but was forced to leave with no clue as to where she was; now, he says, he is unable to sleep.

Police removed Noelina Prospere-Medor from a small room aback of a house at Craig, East Bank Demerara on Saturday last.
Speaking with this newspaper from his London home yesterday, Medor said he has not slept since hearing that his mother had been found and was uncertain what would prompt those responsible for housing the woman to have her living under such conditions.

The room in the small and dirty apartment at Craig, East Bank Demerara, where Noelina Prospere-Medor was found.

The room in the small and dirty apartment at Craig, East Bank Demerara, where Noelina Prospere-Medor was found.

However, Medor said he could not return here until another two months since he will shortly undergo a medical surgery. “I can’t believe it and since I’ve heard her voice it’s like I can’t sleep properly, but I have to come back and ensure that she is in a proper home and well taken care of,” the man told Stabroek News yesterday.
The man said that when his mother was found, he received a telephone call from a woman he still does not know, then allowed to speak with his mother. According to him, his mother’s voice did not sound as strong as when he last spoke to her. He said up to yesterday he was trying to contact social services for some form of assistance in housing the woman until he could return here. He said, he got no replies from several telephone calls, but added that he would continue to try since he has learnt that his mother would be held at the Georgetown Public Hospital, as there was no one to release her to.

Yesterday the woman remained at the Accident and Emergency Unit and she was resting comfortably.
Asked whether he had any information whatsoever regarding the Craig house, Medor said no, neither was he aware of who was taking care of his mother while she was there. He said a woman who identified herself as “Simone Henry” spoke with him on Saturday and said she had been looking after his mother at Craig.

Medor said he was hesitant to enter into any agreement with Henry when he spoke to her since he had no idea who she was. “I need to come back but I go into surgery next week and it will be a while before I could move. But I hope I could get social services to help me and then I will come and place her in a home and pay for her to stay,” he said.
Meanwhile, Medor said he still could not believe that the woman, who along with her husband, last took care of his mother had denied knowing where she was.

The woman had also told Stabroek News that she had no idea where Prospere-Medor was and said the last thing she knew was that her estranged husband had removed her from the home when the two of them separated.

She had also accused Medor’s son of having motives other than love for his mother in wanting to find her. She felt he was more interested in a piece of property Prospere-Medor owns at Albouys-town Georgetown  and for which she had made her husband, power of attorney.

The caretaker
Meanwhile, Prospere-Medor’s caretaker at the unkempt Craig room said both the initial caretakers knew of the old woman’s whereabouts and had hired her to care for her. She claimed that they both visited the place on numerous occasions. This was also the position of another woman who lives in the same Craig compound.
On Sunday, this newspaper visited the Craig location and observed that except for a small pair of windows there was no other form of light being provided to the filthy room.
The caretaker told Stabroek News that some time at the end of June she was approached by the man who asked her to rent him the room at the back of the building. “I rented the place to him and he moved in here with the old woman. I read in the newspaper that his wife said she don’t know anything about the old woman… She is lying. She knew about the old woman,” the woman said. She claimed that after he moved in with the old woman, his wife visited regularly and even spent nights there. However, she said, whenever the husband went to the interior where he works the wife would also leave and Prospere-Medor would be left alone except for short daily visits by the wife.

“I told [the husband] a number of times that he can’t leave this woman in here alone like that. I know when a person sickly like that they need someone with them 24/7,” the woman said.

Lived alone
She said when she was approached by the man who asked for assistance in taking care of Prospere-Medor, she initially hesitated.
“He spoke to my fiancée and I didn’t really want to take the job but my fiancée tell me to take it. He told my fiancée was his mother and that he wanted someone to take care of her when he went away,” the woman said. She said the man told her he would have paid her $40,000, but while he gave her money thrice after hiring her, the amounts did not total $40,000.

According to her, at one time, the man fed Prospere-Medor fruits only, but she advised him that this was not enough. She revealed too that along with the small bed Prospere-Medor slept on, the room also had a hammock, a wardrobe, a trunk and a makeshift bench.

The woman said when she started to voice her concerns about the condition of the place and how unsuitable it was, the man sent his wife to inform her that her services were no longer needed. “I was very upset because when he was in trouble he come he self and when he want to fire me he send she,” the woman said.
She was the one who called the police and the media after she was informed by her cousin that Prospere-Medor’s son was looking for her.

It’s a shame, woman, u knew where this beautiful soul was, and only called and reported her where abouts because of fear, u knew that this soul was living in a deplorable state, without proper meals, medical services, contact with other humans, which helps the elderly. Because he was not paying u as he should, u left and never contacted anyone concerning her condition, u also was taking care of her in a small room, no sunlight, walks, friends, what kind of person are you.

Mr. Mendor sounds like a man who likes to make excuses. All the time he crying foul for the authorities to help him find his ma and now when they do he saying that he cant go to guyana because of his plan to take an operation. If she was dead now, what would have been his response. Mr. Mendor needs to stop his excuses and pack himself and go back to look after his mother’s interest. He has more to cry about. He better keep thanking God that the poor old woman is alive and step up and do what he needs to do. Look after her. Stop being so selfish

You are being unfair to Mr. Mentor, if the man has a medical condition that needs to be adressed he has to take care of it. He didn’t say he’s be back in 1 yr he said 2 months. Given he fact that he has to travel from London which isnt too cheap these days.

I am not the one being unfair to Mr. Mendor. The only unfair persons in this scenario are the ones involved and that includes Mr. Mendor. If he cant travel back to see her well then he can put system in place to get her to go to him. I am sure he knows that or he can contact an airline and make the necessary arrangement instead of making an excuse. It is his mother he is talking about here whom he has not seen for 40 years. Money cant pay for doing the right things for your mother. I think there is an ulterior motive behind this. 40 years and never CHECKED. No way. Something not straight here. But God is the judge and he will render judgement in his own time.

My dear friend, I had to agree with you on this headline. You have struck the nail on it’s head. In my opinion he did his best. We don’t know his cercumstances and the conditions under which he live and work, these factors when taken into consideration can have both a negative or positive effect on an individual. What if he wasn’t doing well before?{productive} but now things are going his way ,hence, giving him the opportunity to do good and make up for the pass. When you look at our hands, all of our fingers are not equal. Some of us came abroad and get a fast start to a new life while others get off on a slow start, bottom line, we’ll all get there, which in his case he did beside, he just returned to London where it’s not cheap to travel from. Equeally important too is the fact that he’s scheduled for an emergency surgary. With out him there is nothing he could do to help her so, self preservation first then his mother second. Remember now!, he’s going to return in two to three months time. Plz: note; ‘he was sending money to take care of her{his mother} while in London’. That right there tells me that he was and is thinking of her. Good luck to you Sir. Mendor.

Moving on: Those people who he trusted to look after his mother seems to be opportunist, took his money and lived large off of it. This happens too often in Guyana, whether it’s overseas based Guyanese sending their elderly family members for retirement, or children to get a good Guyanese upbrining, most of the caretakers pocket most of the money, even the clothes and other stuff they send. Guyanese use to be such good people. It’s a shame hard times have made us hardened.

Not to the editor, the whay this story is written makes it so confusing as to who did what and where it happened. Try harder for clarity next time!

The british high commissioner also should look into the matter. Her son who lives in London is collecting his mother financial assistance for over 40 years from the British Government and is not even using it to properly assist his mother.

Also all those involved should also know that God is not dead and life is a circle, what goes around comes around and i hope that they can handle the situation when the table turns, they have a lot to answer for in the end.

Mr. Medor needs to cancel his surgery and go to Guyana and take care of his Mom. I cannot believe that he has not seen his Mom in 40 years. I am residing here for the past 16 years and I make sure that I go home and visit my Mom and also she visits me, I will and cannot go without seeing my Mom. I will do anything for my Mom because you only have one Mother. Ms. Medor is such a sweet woman and looks great at her age Thank God for that, all she needs is someone who will and I mean this take great care of her and treat her like their Mom, feed her properly, take her out and have her looking real good. I wish I was at home I would have loved to take care of her, because that is something I enjoy doing.

Guyanese people home do not have nursing homes to put their parents in like in North America and other parts of the world do, what we do and do best is to keep them with us until the Lord is ready for them and I think that is the best thing. I respect all my people for doing so and also we must remember that the way we treat our parents our kids treat us. I always tell my American friends that we take care of our elderly parents and they would say, why ? And I would tell them that is how we were brougt up, I would never say raise because you raise animals and you bring your kids up tp RESPECT OTHERS ALWAYS.

As I am made to understand that Ms. Medor has a piece of land in Guyand and made the person that was taking care of her power of attorney so that heartless culprit will get her land I do hope not, may be that is why her son is trying to get back in contact with her so that he can get that land and if that is his reason, I take he should be ashamed of himself. I wish Ms. Medor a speedy recovery and hopes she find a stable and care place to call home.

After seeing a picture of Son and Mother in KN, I came to the conclusion, that sometimes we are too quick to pass judgement. I think that Sylverster suspected
that his mother was not being cared for properly, and although he funded her upkeep, The money was being misused. He did the right thing in paying a visit himself. In doing so he was able to establish that his suspicion was correct. Glad that he found his mom. Sometimes financial difficulties, prevents them from living together, Good luck Sylvester , she’s fortunate to have a good son. A lot of children does not help their parents, financially. Some can help physically,

You all are too quick to judge. God said Jugde not less you be judged. You do now know the whole story. He may not even have the money to travel home again so quickly. You do not know the illness he has. Stop your harsh judgements without knowing the inside of the story. Yes, it is sad that this woman was mistreated, no one is justifying that but before you judge Mr. Medor, you should make sure you have all the facts straight.
