Unlicensed driver fined $65,000 for series of charges
An unlicensed driver who drove a vehicle without the owner’s consent, smashing it into a lamp post and ending up in a trench was fined a total of $65,000 or three months imprisonment when he appeared before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Harvey Thomas pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous driving, driving without being the holder of a valid driver’s license and breach of insurance.
He further pleaded not guilty to a charge of driving a vehicle without the consent of the owner.
It is alleged that on Monday Thomas drove motor vehicle PHH 1267 without the consent of the owner, Food for the Poor Guyana Inc.
According to the facts of the case, Thomas, an unlicensed driver who was not insured drove the motor vehicle in a dangerous manner, smashing into a lamp post and ending up in a trench.
The man denied taking the vehicle without the consent of the company, where he is employed as a security guard, but he admitted committing the other offences.
For the charges of dangerous driving, driving without being the holder of a valid driver’s licence and breach of insurance he was fined $25,000, $10,000 and $30,000 respectively or he is to serve a one-month sentence for each.
Magistrate Priya Beharry placed Thomas on $25,000 bail for the charge of driving a vehicle without the consent of the owner.
The matter continues on September 24.
