Another night, another stunner
By Kizan Brumell
Roy Franker of the Harpy Eagle Gym turned in a crowd pleasing performance when he stopped Edwin Jones on Monday night in their lightweight contest as the Gaskin and Jackson Jewellers-sponsored National Open amateur boxing championships continued at the National Gymnasium.

Franker astounded the spectators with his arsenal of combinations and gave Jones a taste of the canvas, which he seemed to take a liking to.
A left hook which landed cleanly to the head of Jones from Franker sent Jones staggering to the ground where he took sometime to recover before rising again only for the referee to label it a Referee Stopped Contest (RSC).
Just Starter’s Nigel Ames of the Sophia Boxing Gym made almost strolled into the under-15 70-74lbs final when he defeated Cornel Aaron of the West Side Bombers (WSB) in his second of the night. He had earlier defeated Amos Abrams of Mocha.
Apart from those three fights there were 22 other bouts contested Monday night, 12 of which were finals.

A Ricola Boxing Gym final it was when Romel Rowley defeated gym mate Eon Barker (65-69lbs) while Morris Primo (WSB) won the 75-79lbs final against Leon Semple of Timheri Warriors and Wendel Joseph (Moc) was the 80-84lbs champion after defeating gym mate Omali Henry in a final.
Devon Giles (Moc) and Romel Moore (WSB) became the 110-117lbs and 126-133lbs champions after defeating Marvin Williams (TW) and Damion Castillo (TW) respectively.
All Cadet – Just Starter bouts were also finals and Buxton Bombers’ Marlon Sullivan lost to Lyndon Daniels (Ric) in the flyweight division while Trevor George (Ric) became the featherweight champion after thrashing fellow gym companion Ernest James.

In the 95-99lbs category, West Side Bombers’ Orin Johnson defeated Mocha’s Charles Smith and Tesaun McKenzie of Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) recorded a victory against Orolain Roberts (Moc).
When the national Open category began, Guyana Defence Force’s (GDF) bantamweight boxer Ryan Jeffers defeated Edwin Richards of Young Achievers (YA) and Aubrey Moore of Essequibo overpowered Republican’s Robert Nicholas in the lightweight division.
Junior welterweight Damien Ross (Rep) pulled of a close victory against GDF’s Bert Braithwaite and another Republican Hudley Khan won against GDF’s Randolph Williams.
Undoubtedly the easiest fight of the night was Jermain Barker’s win over Dennis Daniels.
Daniels suffered three knock down counts at the hands of his Republican gym mate Barker in the first round of their welterweight bout before the referee stopped the contest a few second after the third knock down count.
