Fruta Conquerors are DeSinco Trading Under-18 2008 champions
The Fruta Conquerors football club maintained its unbeaten streak to claim the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) organised DeSinco Trading Under-18 round robin/knockout competition on Saturday when they defeated Alpha United in the final at the Tucville Playfield.
Fruta Conquerors conquered Alpha United 3 – 1 in an electrifying final while the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) outwitted Sunburst Camptown 2- 1 to take the third place spot in the tourney.
Early on in the final, the two teams, Alpha United and Fruta Conquerors, played attacking football but it was Alpha’s perseverance that gave then the early lead.
Alpha United’s vibrant forward and captain Andrew Murray jnr., drew first blood for his team in the 43rd minute when he received a terrific cross from the left flank which he buried into the back of the net near the far post.
Conquerors did not have to wait long for the equalizer. They were given a penalty after the tournament’s highest goal scorer Manessah Primo was fouled inside the 18-yard box while he was about to attempt a shot at goal.
Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the final Paul Bobb was the successful penalty taker for Conquerors as he squeezed his shot past a diving Alex Murray in goal who only managed to get his finger tips to the ball but was not able to save the penalty which came at the stroke of half time. When played resumed, Primo made his presence felt when he got his 11th goal in the 15th minute of the second half.
Primo got a clear shot from what looked like a goal mouth scrimmage. The final blow of the encounter was delivered by Conquerors in the 76th minute when Richard Brotherson thumped one through the hands of Alpha’s custodian who made another attempt to save but the ball eventually made its way over the goal line.
In the GFC/Camptown encounter it was Camptown who drew first blood in the 18th minute when Devon Mosely found the back of the net to enforce Camptown’s confidence early in their match.
GFC then got a grip on their opportunities and produced two second half goals in the 47th and 66th minutes. Both goals came during goal mouth scrimmages, and were scored by Gavin White and Marlon Johnson respectively.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Sunburst Camptown was adjudged the Most Disciplined Team while Fruta Conquerors’ Colin Edwards was named as the best goalkeeper of the tournament which included a total of 38 matches during which 133 goals were scored.
