Love at first sight?

If I had a dollar for every time someone told me something that was not true I would be somewhere above the average life that I am living and this goes back as far as those days when fairy tales were read to me.

I mean, come on, Prince Charming? If he exists then he must be pulling a Robinson Crusoe; hiding out somewhere on a deserted island. I can actually see him struggling to keep a bonfire going and the signal is not saying, “Help” but rather, “I need more beers and a new cable for my TV the game will be on soon”.

Honestly, it just does not feel right anymore to sit around and believe that the “right” guy is out there, or to follow those rules about what Mr Right will do and say for you to know that he is ‘the one’. Give me a break; the only thing right about the guys hanging around this corner of the earth is their perception of how some women really see them.

But even us sceptics have our moments of doubt or weakness, however you want to put it. So as much as I would love to debunk the theory of love at first sight, I simply can’t. It sure does sound like a lot of wishful thinking, and I have said as much a while ago. But what if it really is true?

What if, two words that I hate to say, but they come out anyway. But what if there is something such as love at first sight and it happened to you.

Just imagine how easy it would be to meet someone, fall head over heels, and live out the rest of your days happy and content with that person; not ever wondering whether it was the right thing to do because you have no complaints.
I don’t know what love at first sight means. Does it mean that when you see that person you feel butterflies in the stomach, you lose your balance, you end up feeling dizzy then you swoon?

This is where things start to sound real ‘storybook’ but again, what if it is possible? I recall being at the market one day and bumping into a guy. I swear he looked like all that storybook drama was happening except that he did not faint; he bumped into a provision stall, shot up quickly and said something under his breath before marching off. I don’t think it worked because nothing was happening with me and this thing has got to be mutual, so I am told.

The experience of meeting someone for the first time and feeling a little stirring inside is truly something; it is like discovering something new. But nothing beats running into the same guy day after day and seeing a certain sparkle in his eyes when he sees you. His face lights up and he looks a whole lot perkier whenever you show up and he finds all sorts of reasons to come over and talk to you.

Maybe you don’t feel quite the same way, but you enjoy the fact that it probably could mean something; maybe love at first sight for him.

I don’t really believe in it, but the feeling you get when someone is enamoured with you and wants to be in the same space with you at every opportunity does something to you; it transforms you into a believer one meeting at a time. (thescene@stabroeknews.com)
