An 18-year-old cane harvester was denied his pre-trial liberty when he appeared at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of rape before Magistrate Geeta Chandan.
The court heard that Mahendra Gopaul of Betsy Ground, East Canje allegedly raped a female on December 28, 2006 in East Canje.
The female was reportedly alone at home when Gopaul entered and committed the act. He was not required to plead.
The prosecutor opposed bail on the grounds of the nature and gravity of the offence. Gopaul was remanded to prison and will return to court on January 17 for bail review.
