Ganja farmer dies after shot by police

A 45-year-old man died last Thursday, hours after being shot by police who raided his Kimbia, Berbice River farm and destroyed a quantity of marijuana plants.

Police in a press release said that ranks in ‘E&F’ Divisions (interior locations) are investigating the circumstances under which Clifford Gladstone a farmer of Kimbia waterfront, Berbice River met his demise.

On Thursday, police conducted an eradication exercise on a farm operated by Gladstone during which over 60 marijuana plants ranging from nursery to over 6′ in height were destroyed.

The police, during their attempt to arrest Gladstone, were confronted with resistance from him during which he received a gunshot injury to his left thigh. He was taken to Calcuni Medical Centre where he was seen and treated for the injury sustained and was referred to New Amsterdam Hospital, but subsequently died.

The body is currently at Kwakwani mortuary and police are continuing investigations into the incident, the release said.
