Jewellery thief jailed for three years

Magistrate Krishendat Persaud on Tuesday sentenced a man to three years imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to a charge of break and enter and larceny.

According to the Number 51 Court report Compton Lyken, 31, of Line Path, Skeldon, on November 28, 2006 stole a quantity of gold jewellery from Eon Mc Bean’s place of business. The jewellery was valued at $90,000.

Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Michael Grant, told the court that Mc Bean secured his restaurant, located in the lower flat of his home, at around 7.35 pm and later retired to bed. He was awakened by a strange noise coming from the lower flat and, upon investigation, found the defendant on his premises. Lyken had wrenched open a western door in the building and was carting off the articles. The businessman raised an alarm and neighbours came to his rescue. Lyken was apprehended and charged with the offence.
