Ministry to assist 103-year-old woman

The Ministry of Human Services says it will be providing assistance to 103-year-old Gaitree Kowsilla.

According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release on Thursday human services minister Priya Manickchand visited the woman at President Bharrat Jagdeo’s request after her daughter and caretaker Sookia Ramdass penned a request.

Kowsilla, of 272 Good Hope Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara, came to Guyana on October 10, 1912 as an indentured labourer. She is now bedridden and Ramdass, her youngest daughter cares for her. Ramdass said her mother is very jovial and that she likes to talk about her experience working on the sugar plantations during indentureship.

Manickchand said government would provide public assistance and other support for Ramdass as she is unable to work. Former Minister of Human Services Bibi Shadick had given a wheelchair to the family early last year.
