Prosecuting for ganja costs $40,000 per case

Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee said 421 persons were successfully prosecuted for possession of marijuana at a cost of $40,000 each during the period 2005-2006.

The minister said acting head of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit said that that figure is the estimated cost to prosecute such cases. Rohee’s submissions were given in response to questions Alliance For Change Member of Parliament Raphael Trotman posed at the first session of the ninth sitting of Parliament last month.

The minister said those numbers are from a total of 1230 persons who were arrested for possession of the narcotic. He also submitted to Parliament, on Thursday, that there are currently 51 persons serving sentences for possession and 76 have been remanded to prison.
