Man took $2M promising crashed cars

A man who allegedly obtained $2 million from another man after pretending that he was in a position to purchase crashed cars for him was yesterday granted $200,000 bail by Acting Chief Magistrate Cecil Sullivan.

Mohamed Abdulla, 31, of 319 East Street pleaded not guilty to two false pretence charges.

It is alleged that between December 8 and 16 last year with intent to defraud, Abdulla obtained $900,000 from Ramgobin Prahalad by falsely pretending that he knew someone who was selling three motorcars and he was in a position to obtain the cars for him. Also between November 22 and December 19 at Georgetown with intent to defraud, he allegedly obtained $1.1 million by again falsely pretending that he was in a position to purchase five motor vehicles from the Guyana Police Force.

Attorney-at-law Glen Hanoman in his bail application for Abdulla, in the absence of attorney Vic Puran, told the court that Abdulla did receive money from Prahalad. He stated that Abdulla is a mechanic who is in the business of purchasing crashed vehicles and that he had a business relationship with Prahalad. He added that he was unable to purchase the vehicles after collecting the money but never had any criminal intention. Abdulla, he said, is prepared to either deliver the goods or repay Prahalad.

The magistrate granted the bail and he will return to court on January 31.
