Couple on cycle hit by car

A car yesterday morning knocked two persons off of a pedal cycle seriously injuring one of them.

James Rodrigues, 54, of 2346 North Ruimveldt sustained massive head injuries and is currently in the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Hospital while his wife Shirley, 57, who sustained a dislocated shoulder, received treatment and was sent home.

Stabroek News understands that around 9.30 am, the couple was heading in a westerly direction on the Aubrey Barker Public Road, South Ruimveldt when in the vicinity of Penny Lane the car that was being driven by a woman hit them from behind.

At the time of the accident the road was wet and the weather was overcast.

The two injured persons were picked up and taken to the Georgetown Hospital.

James Rodrigues, who was unconscious, was admitted, while Shirley was discharged after she saw a doctor.

When Stabroek News arrived on the scene shortly after the accident the pedal cycle was lying on the southern side of the road with the back wheel slightly folded and the car was parked about 15 feet away with the windscreen smashed in on the left side.
