Minister of Education, Shaik Baksh, yesterday said that he would be sending some of his officers into the secondary school where a student was found with a quantity of marijuana and it was discovered that a gang was peddling drugs and stolen items.
The minister was approached by this newspaper and he said he could not confirm or deny that his ministry was made aware of the incident, which occurred on Tuesday, but said he will be checking with his officers and will ensure that they visit the school and investigate the issue.
Meanwhile, Stabroek News contacted the head of the school who said that she wanted to say nothing on the issue.
A check with the police public relations office revealed that according to officers at the Brickdam Police Station they know nothing of the incident but the officer said that it was possible that headquarters was dealing with the matter.
On Wednesday Stabroek News was told that five male students of the school were detained after a form two student was found with several packets of marijuana.
An official of the school had stated that on Tuesday teachers were making random checks after receiving reports that some students were selling drugs in the school. The form two student was discovered in a class with several packets of marijuana which were packaged for sale. The child was questioned extensively by the teachers but he had refused to divulge information and the headmistress then called in the police. This newspaper was told that three police officers visited the school and after questioning the child eventually called the name of a third form student who is reportedly the head of a group called the ‘G Unit’ which for sometime has been peddling illegal items in the school.
The names of three other students were called and they were all taken to the station by the police with the alleged group leader vehemently denying any involvement.
