Miner gets three years for ganja trafficking in interior

A 26-year-old miner was yesterday sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to a charge of possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Brian De Roche of Lot 65 Cummings Street, Georgetown was also fined $10,000 by Acting Chief Magistrate Cecil Sullivan.

On Monday at Kurupung Landing, Mazaruni River De Roche had in his possession 16.5 grammes of cannabis.

Reports are that police were on patrol in the area when they stopped and searched De Roche. They found the drugs hidden in his left side pants pocket. As a result of the find he was arrested and later charged.
