Rea Pele, Fire Power to clash

Horse racing action returns to the Ryan Crawford Memorial Turf Club and Sports Facility in Corentyne Berbice this afternoon when an eight-race meeting will be held. The meeting is the third for the club, formerly the Alness Turf Club and according to race organizer Bobby `Syrup’ Vaughn, turfites will be in for a treat at the Pre Valentine event. Vaughn said that the track is in immaculate condition and was sprinkled with light rain yesterday morning.

“The track is in very good condition and expected to turn in fast times,” the organizer said. In the feature race set aside for horses classified F and G and lower sprinter/stayer Rea Pele, a chestnut mare owned by Colin Elcock is expected to be challenged by Kris Jagdeo’s sprinter gelding Fire Power over seven furlongs.

Bay gelding Fast Company of the Lillian Crawford Stables and chestnut mare Spin and Squeeze have also entered.

Firm favourite to win the 1100 metres H and I and Lower race is sprinter/stayer Surfina, a chestnut mare. Vaughn said that approximately 40 horses have entered for the meeting whose major sponsor is Banks DIH Limited. The first race begins at 1:30 pm.
