Pooran knocks out champs Merry Boys

Defending champions Ceramic Merry Boys Sports crashed out of the Carib Sunday League Limited Overs competition when they were beaten by FCB Clarke Road

Guyanese Homchand Pooran starred in the quarterfinal fixture, at the Wilson Road recreation ground in Penal.

Chasing a revised target of 176 in 35 overs, Clarke Road, led by good knocks from all-rounder Homchand Pooran 52 and former T&T player, Gregory Mahabir 54 not out cruised to 178 for three. Earlier, the visiting Merry Boys team chalked up 252 for nine from 50 overs, with T&T’s Stanford Twenty/20 batsman Mario Belcon scoring a fluent 72. Pooran was the top bowler for Clarke Road with three for 40, while former T&T off-spinner Mukesh Persad bagged two for 38.

Elsewhere, it was the turn of another Guyanese in the person of Gajanand Singh to star as W Connection Wanderers continued their impressive run.

Led by solid knocks from former West Indies “B” player Kenroy Williams with 68 not out, West Indies U-19 batsman Singh, 44, and former T&T national Narine Bidhesi, 44, defeated Munroe Road Sports by seven wickets at Gilbert Park. There were also victories for Alescon Comets and Queen’s Park.
