Three others being sought over T&T drug bust

Police yesterday were seeking three other persons in connection with the TT $5.3 million cocaine seizure last week in Trinidad.

The police said on Monday that they had arrested one person in connection with the bust and Stabroek News was told yesterday that the person was still in custody. Sources said the lawmen are processing documentation to arrest the three other persons and charges are likely to be laid soon.

Asked whether the arrested person(s) could be handed over to Trinidadian authorities since the drugs were found there, one source could not say. However, another said that would not only depend on what the hierarchy of the force decides, but on the existing legal framework.

Meanwhile, in relation to the lawyer who allegedly attempted to tamper with the investigation, police said he is being “watched.”

A report in the Trinidad Express last week had said that the cocaine was discovered in pellet form, stuffed inside vegetables. It weighed 13.4 kilogrammes. The report said there was more cocaine hidden inside baskets of other vegetables bound for Canada on board Caribbean Airlines flight 600 at Piarco Interna-tional Airport. Police in Trinidad had said that the flight originated from Guyana. No one was arrested in Trinidad but the officers had said they made the seizure after weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering.
