Driver accused of causing death of best friend

A man who allegedly caused the death of his best friend early yesterday morning when he drove his pickup dangerously was placed on $100,000 bail by Acting Chief Magistrate Cecil Sullivan.

Andre Marques, 26, of Cummingsburg pleaded not guilty at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court to causing death by dangerous driving.

It is alleged that on March 2 at Church Street he drove his motor pickup in a manner dangerous to the public causing the death of Jason Lopes.

Attorney-at-law Raphael Trotman, appearing for Marques, told the court that the accident occurred at 1:30 am yesterday at the junction of Camp and Church streets which he said is a blind corner. He stated that Marques’s pickup came into contact with Lopes’s motorcycle. Lopes was 17. He added that what makes the case different is that the two men were best friends and that it is causing tremendous turmoil between the two families. He added that it was all very unfortunate. He then requested bail. Police prosecutor Desiree Fowler did not object to bail.

The case was transferred to Court Seven for March 7.
