There is a distinct effort to remove any influence of the Judeo-Christian ethic (synonymous with freedom of speech, religion and expression, and the rule of law) from the realm of socio-political affairs in Guyana. Sadly, a so-called “Christian” is accommodating the misadventure, and we should demand answers from him in the face of considerable evidence.
With the surfacing of a hitherto secret Memorandum of Understanding (“Govt. agreed to facilitate casino at Buddy’s before hotel built” SN March 4, 2007) it is now clear that Guyana’s President, its Prime Minister, its Cabinet and the Guyana Office for Investment misled the Guyanese people regarding the often repeated claim that “no decision had previously been made on the issue”. Now the “legislation” makes room for 30 such casinos.
It was no surprise to see a small article (07.03.10) appearing in the Stabroek News headlined “Inter Religious Television group elects Edghill chairman”. I submit that neither Bishop Juan Edghill (who took no public position on casino gambling), nor Ronald McGarrel nor Swami Aksharananda represents the Christian position on “President Bharrat Jagdeo’s direction that all religious bodies should participate in the project
