Cannon still missing

The cannon, which disappeared from the Ministry of Public Works compound in January has not yet been located.

This is according to the Minister of Public Works Robeson Benn who had confirmed last month that a member of the ministry’s staff was suspended in connection with the disappearance of the historical artifact.

The police said in a press release that an investigation had been launched into the theft of a three-and-a-half-foot metal cannon from the Ministry of Public Works, Georgetown around January 5 this year.

A source pointed out that the suspected member of staff claimed to have carted the cannon away under the false belief that the historic piece was there to be dumped. However, this newspaper understands everyone at the Public Works Ministry would have been aware of the reason for the cannon being where it was when it disappeared.

The cannon was discovered in the Upper Demerara River around 2002-03 by persons diving in the river. It was presented to the minister before Christmas last year and removed before he could properly hand it over to suitable national custodians.
