Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle yesterday granted bail in the sum of $450,000 to a mother of five, the fifth person to appear in court to answer charges in connection with the Clico insurance fraud.
Ruth Glasgow, 42, of 72 Adelaide Street, Charlestown pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit a felony and attempt to commit a felony. It is alleged that on January 2, at Georgetown, Glasgow attempted to defraud and conspired with persons unknown to commit a felony. She is accused of attempting to forge a Clico insurance policy in her own favour, knowing it to be false. Glasgow is also charged with attempting to obtain $250,000 on March 14 on a forged life insurance policy, in her own favour, knowing it to be forged.
Attorney-at-law Simone Morris-Ramlal in association with Camilla Edwards represented Glasgow. Morris-Ramlal told the court that her client is married with five school-age children aged seven to 15 years old. She added that Glasgow is a housewife who had never had any problems with the law. Further, she said, Glasgow was kept in police custody since Friday, which is in excess of 72 hours. In her bail application, Morris-Ramlal reminded the court that other matters connected to Glasgow’s case were brought to court and those persons were granted bail. She also said that Glasgow is not a flight risk.
The magistrate granted Glasgow bail in the sums of $250,000 on the conspiracy charge and $200,000 on the attempt to commit a felony charge. She also ordered Glasgow to appear at Court 3 on April 18. Four other women have already been charged in connection with the Clico fraud. Christina Doobay, 29, of ‘BB’ Eccles was not required to plead to two charges of conspiracy to commit a felony; Sherylyn Solomon, 26, of 213 Stanley Place, Kitty was not required to plead to a charge of forgery. Also, Christina Stevens, 21, of 61 Oleander Gardens was not required to plead to two charges of obtaining money by false pretence and Stacy De Nobrega, 26, of 151 Sixth Street, Alberttown was not required to plead to a charge of conspiracy to commit a felony. Glasgow was the only accused to have had her charges read to her summarily.
